THE University of Louisville swimming and diving teams split with visiting Big East rival West Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Cardinal women won 160-140 with the men falling 194-104 in the first home meet of the season. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;I am extremely proud of our efforts today, our women closed rankes and really withstood a very, very tough WVU team. They earned their victory,&quot; said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. &quot;The guys raced tough but at the end WVU was better today.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>U of L divers swept both boards, with McKenzie Long and Robbie Lewis winning both the 1- and 3-meter board. Freshman Amanda Henleben was a double winner as was Leslie VanWinkle. Andrei Teudean was the only Cardinal to win a race on the men&#39;s side against a very difficult WVU opponent. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;Winning this meet was a big win for our women,&quot; Albiero continued. &quot;WVU has a young women&#39;s team. For the men, we know we have some things to work on and we are progressing.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>The Mountaineer women got on the board in the first race when they won the 200-medley relay. The Cardinal-A relay team of Karen Criss, Heather Meng, Johanna Nyysti and Melanie Greyling were in hot pursuit for a second. WVU&#39;s men&#39;s foursome finished first with U of L&#39;s Andrei Teudean, Vali Preda, Adam Madarassy and Carlos Van Isschot teaming for second. <\/p>\n<p>The normally grueling 1000-free came down to a blazing finish as freshman Amanda Henleben held off WVU&#39;s Lindsey Largo for first. Ashley Jackson muscled in for a third palce to add more points to the board for the Cardinals. U of L&#39;s Anthony Mason scored a third and Charlton Lawson was fourth in the 1000-free for the men. <\/p>\n<p>In the 200-free, U of L swept the top two places with Leslie VanWinkle taking first and Melanie Greyling touching second. Leigh Smith added a point with a fifth. For the men, newcomer Luke Wakefield touched fourth after WVU sweep of the first three places. <\/p>\n<p>In the 100-back for the Cardinals, newcomer Alana Berrocal was second and Larissa Niehoff was fourth. Andrei Teudean won decisively and freshman Peyton Bobo touched third for the men. <\/p>\n<p>In the women&#39;s 100-breast, Heather Meng and Johanna Nyysti were second and third for the Cardinals. For the men, in a torrid race that saw the top three finishers all break pool records. Vali Preda was outtouched by WVU&#39;s Nick Delic. Chris Lindauer touched third for the Cardinals in the 100-breast.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200-fly, Abby Miller broke a pool record for first with Jenny Schimenti finishing seocnd and Amanda Henleben picking up third for a sweep. For the men in the 200-fly, WVU&#39;s Pablo Marmolejo won with Adam Madarassy touching second and Alabama transfer Andy Neff was third for the Cardinals. <\/p>\n<p>In the 50-free, WVU&#39;s Kayla Andrews was first with U of L freshman Anna Dischuck taking third, Liz Halet fourth and Emily Rabe was fifth. For the men, West Virginia swept the top four places, paced by Andrew Langenfeld, but U of L&#39;s Paul Augustus was fifth and Ian Trapp was sixth. <\/p>\n<p>In the women&#39;s 100-free, WVU&#39;s Kayla Andrews got her second win for the Mountaineers with Leslie VanWinkle and Melanie Greyling scoring second and third to keep the Cards in the hunt. In the men&#39;s 100-free, WVU&#39;s Nick Delic got his second win with U of L&#39;s Chris Lindauer touching second. Adam Madarassy was fourth. <\/p>\n<p>In the women&#39;s 200-back, WVU&#39;s Morgan Callaway had a decisive win but Karen Criss was second and senior Larissa Niehoff rallied for fourth. For the men, WVU&#39;s Michael Walker had a pool record-breaking first time of 1:50.21 with Pablo Marmolejo edging for second, Andrei Teudean was third to add points for the Cardinals. <\/p>\n<p>In the women&#39;s 200-breast, Heather Meng had her hands full with Kitti Viesz but finished second and Anna Dishuck touched fourth. In the men&#39;s 200-breast, Sean Mahoney beat Vali Preda in the 200-breast. <\/p>\n<p>In the women&#39;s 500-free, U of L&#39;s Amanda Henleben and Lindsey Largo went head to head again with Henleben finishing first, Largo second and Abby Jackson scooting in for third. For the men&#39;s 500-free, Zoltan Povazsai had a tremendous kick to take the race with Charlton Lawson as the top Cardinal finisher at fifth. <\/p>\n<p>In women&#39;s 1-meter diving, McKenzie Long won by more than 30 points with 263.47 score. Sarah Sandroni&#39;s second made it a one-two sweep with a second. Erica Pfeiffer was the top Mountaineer finisher at third. Robbie Lewis took the event for the men. <\/p>\n<p>In the 100-fly, WVU&#39;s Stephanie Shupe took the race with Jenny Schimenti finishing third and Johanna Nyysti touching fourth. For the men, in the 100-fly, Adam Madarassy finished third with Langenfeld taking the race and Marmolejo touching second. Andy Neff and Matt Maley each scored as well. <\/p>\n<p>After the break, U of L&#39;s Karen Criss finished second in the 200-back for the women and Andrei Teudean was third for the men. <\/p>\n<p>In the 200-breast, Veisz took first with Meng touching second. Mahoney edged Preda in the men&#39;s 200-breast. <\/p>\n<p>Amanda Henleben took first in the 500-free with Ashley Jackson taking third. Povazsai took first with Lawson as the top Cardinal swimmer in fourth. <\/p>\n<p>In the 100-fly, Jenny Schimenti was third followed by Johanna Nyysti in fourth. Langenfeld and Marmolejo took first and second again with Madarassy taking third and Andy Neff fourth. <\/p>\n<p>McKenzie Long won her second board with a first in the 3-meter event, followed by Marianne Bradford in second and Sandroni in third. Robbie Lewis took first in the 3-meter board for the Cardinals. In the 400-IM, Leslie VanWinkle took first with Abby Miller and Jenny Schimenti finishing second and third respectively for a sweep. Vali Preda finished third behind Michael Walker and Sean Mahoney. <\/p>\n<p>In the final event of the day, Anna Dishuck, Melanie Greyling, Leslie VanWinkle and Emily Rabe could not hold off the WVU A-relay in the 200-free relay for a second place finish.
