HUNTINGTON, West Virginia, October 28. SENIOR Brittany Csonka (Bridgeport, W.Va.\/Bridgeport) and junior Lauren Ford (St. Albans, W.Va.\/Nitro) posted lifetime bests in the 200-yard backstroke and butterfly, respectively, to help guide the Marshall Thundering Herd women's swimming team to a 195-162 home victory over the Youngstown State Penguins Saturday. <\/p>\n
The Herd (3-0) extended its home winning streak to four meets, while improving to 5-0 all-time versus the Penguins (0-1). <\/p>\n
"We didn't have as strong of a meet as we had hoped," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "Brittany and Lauren both set lifetime bests, while Ashley McIlvain had a great swim in the mile. <\/p>\n
"We were able to see how our freshmen have progressed to this point. Now, we will prepare for next weekend's home quad-meet." <\/p>\n
Csonka was victorious in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall at 2:11.67, which bested her previous career-best time by more than one second. Ford, who won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:13.13, later cruised to a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.82). <\/p>\n
Junior co-captains Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn.\/Brentwood) and Renee Lambert (Maryville, Tenn.\/William Blount) displayed a strong showing, each winning an event. McIlvain won the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:38.16. Teammate Danielle Chappelle (London, Ontario\/Central Secondary) finished second in 17:50.52, while Lambert won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.38. <\/p>\n
Marshall school record-holder Michaela Sceli (LaSalle, Ontario\/Southern Illinois) won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.62. <\/p>\n
Julia Petzka (Muelheim, Germany\/Riverton) was the Herd's top freshman performer, winning the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 1:01.30. She also set a season-best time in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 28.83. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Siobhan Schuurman (Edmonton, Alberta\/Ross Sheppard) won the three-meter boards with a score of 231.38, while finishing second to Youngstown State's Kelly Reese in the one-meter boards. <\/p>\n
Megan Rupe was one of the Penguins' few bright spots Saturday. Rupe recorded wins in the 50- (25.28) and 100-yard freestyle (55.06) events.
