COLUMBIA, Missouri, October 27. MISSOURI won the first eight events and 13 of 16 overall en route to a 187-111 victory over arch-rival Kansas in women's swimming action at the Mizzou Aquatic Center Friday night. <\/p>\n
The victory marked the largest margin by either school in the 24-meet history, which dates back to 1977. <\/p>\n
"This team came out with greater intensity than I had seen in a while," Mizzou head coach Brian Hoffer said. "I was very surprised with some of the times and with some of the athletes." <\/p>\n
Freshman Colleen Gordon won gold in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and the 200 individual medley. Her time of 4:52.77 in the 500 is an NCAA "B" Consideration time and just seven-hundredths off the school record. <\/p>\n
Tiger senior Shannon Hogan and Jayhawk sophomore Maria Mayrovich went head-to-head in the freestyle sprints with Hogan claiming first in the 50 and Mayrovich nabbing a win in the 100 by six-hundredths of a second. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Jill Bastien won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.72, just ahead of KU's Danielle Herrmann, who had not lost a dual race in that event prior to Friday in her two years of college. Bastien finished second in the 200 breaststroke to classmate Erin Yeager, who swam a personal record of 2:19.14 for top honors and the fifth-best time in MU history. <\/p>\n
Mizzou's diving trio of Kendra Melnychuk, Kim Massaro and Laura Quenette combined to score 20 points in the 1- and 3-meter competitions. Melnychuk and Massaro went one-two in the 3-meter and two-three in the 1-meter. <\/p>\n
Other notable performances included junior Taye Patterson capturing the 100 backstroke in 56.88, nearly two seconds under her season best, junior Katie Gates touching third in the 50 free in a career-low 24.02, and junior Sarah Menefee earning silver in the 200 back in a personal-best time of 2:04.15 – more than a second under her previous best which she set at last year's Big 12 Championships.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
