THE Virginia men's and women's swimming teams will opened their 2006-07 campaign Friday night, as they hosted a quad meet with Clemson, Penn State, and Virginia Tech at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The two-day meet began Friday with diving and the first swimming session. The meet will conclude Saturday morning with the second swimming session. <\/p>\n
Through 10 of 19 events, the Virginia men are leading in all three matchups. Against Penn State, the Cavaliers lead 109-77, against Clemson, the Cavaliers lead 107-77, and against Virginia Tech, the Cavaliers lead 106.5-79.5. <\/p>\n
Through 10 of 19 events, the Virginia women are leading ACC rivals Clemson, 128-58, and Virginia Tech, 119-67. The Cavaliers trail Penn State 100-86. <\/p>\n
The Cavalier men's team won five of the night's eight swimming events. Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the 200 I.M. in 1:51.96, with Pat Reams (North Easton, Mass.) finishing third at 1:53.68. The Cavaliers dominated the 500 Free, placing first through fourth. John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) won the event in 4:28.04, followed by Darren Ankosko (East Brunswick, N.J.) in 4:28.68, Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.) in 4:30.65 and Dan McMahon (Atlanta, Ga.) in 4:30.85. Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia) took first in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 55.53 with Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md.) finishing second in 56.60. Mellors added a third place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.38, and Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished third in the 100 Free in a time of 46.43. The Cavaliers finished first and third in the 200 Butterfly, with Hirniak (1:50.09) winning the event and McMahon (1:51.38) placing third. In the final event of the night, the Cavalier team of Bryan Stahl (Woodland, Texas), Rogulj, Hirniak, and Imboden won the 400 Medley Relay in a time of 3:20.79. <\/p>\n
The Cavalier women's team got off to a strong start, as they took the top two places in the one-meter diving competition. First-year Madison Luce (Colleyville, Texas) won the competition with a score of 257.15, with second-year Jackie Apple (New Albany, Ohio) finishing second with a score of 236.55. In the three-meter diving competition, Apple picked up another second-place finish, with a score of 240.15. In the first swimming competition of the night, the Cavaliers won the 200 Free Relay, as Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C.), Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C.), Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa.) finished in a time of 1:34.97. In the 200 I.M., the Cavaliers finished second and third as Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga.) and Mei Christensen (Reston, Va.) finished with times of 2:05.09 and 2:05.60 respectively. Christensen also finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.57. Jenn Narum (Pleasanton, Calif.) swam the 500 Free in 4:52.25 to finish second.
