MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, October 27. JUNIORS Chase Gravengood and Jeremy Seibel and sophomore Robby Leibold won two events each to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming team to a 135-68 victory over Wheaton College on Friday night. The Panthers won nine of 11 events in recording their first dual victory of the season. <\/p>\n
"It's always nice to get that first win," UWM head coach Dave Griffore said. "The guys did a good job. We have a good program, but we have some work to do. For us to come out with a victory is always a plus and we can move forward now." <\/p>\n
Gravengood was victorious in one of his usual events – the 200 butterfly – but also recorded a win in the 200 freestyle to help Milwaukee out. His first attempt of the season in the 200 free was a battle, as Gravengood touched out the Thunder's John Higgins for the win in a time of 1:45.68, just .26 ahead of Higgin's 1:45.94. <\/p>\n
"Chase is one of the best swimmers in the Horizon League." Griffore said. "I put him in the 200 free because I wanted to win that event and he battled to the end and had a great swim." <\/p>\n
Seibel earned wins for the Panthers in both the 200 IM and the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 1:59.82 in the IM and 2:14.44 in the breaststroke. <\/p>\n
"We had the opportunity to put Jeremy in three individual events and he performed well," Griffore said. "He's been up-and-down lately, so for him to come out tonight with three solid events, I am extremely excited for him." <\/p>\n
Leibold opened the meet with an easy win in the 1000 freestyle, coming in at 9:49.47 to top second place (10:02.14) by over 12 seconds. Then, in the 500, he added another victory, touching the wall in 4:48.30. <\/p>\n
Other winners for UWM included both relay teams and freshman Jeremy Waldhart in the 200 backstroke. Waldhart also took second in the 200 IM. <\/p>\n
Waldhart led a Panther contingent in the backstroke event, as UWM swimmers finished 1-2-3-4. In addition to Waldhart, junior Ross Bittner (second), freshman Dennis Knipfer (third) and sophomore Brian Heinz (fourth) paced the event. <\/p>\n
Other highlights for UWM included sophomore David Adams, who took third in both the 500 and 1000 freestyles, and junior Tyler Jefferson, who was second in both the 50 free and 100 free, where he was touched out by just three-hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
