WASHINGTON, D.C., October 21. THE Georgetown University women's swimming and diving team defeated cross-town foe George Washington, 138-90, today at McCarthy Pool to open its dual meet season. The men's team dropped the dual meet opener to the Colonials, 120-96.<\/p>\n
On the women's side, the freshman quartet of Lindsay Vickroy (Wayne, Pa.\/Conestoga), Laura Stark (Martinsville, N.J.\/Mount St. Mary Academy), Laura Alito (West Caldwell, N.J.\/James Caldwell) and Emma Porteus (Centerville, Mass.\/Barnstable) took a first place finish in the 400 yard medley relay. Stark would go on to take two additional first place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 200 breaststroke. Porteus won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:22.90 and was just behind Stark to take second in the 200 freestyle. Alito placed first in the 50 freestyle and took second in the 100 freestyle behind Vickroy, who posted a time of 55.40 in the event. Also coming in first was freshman Mary McGuire (Port Chester, N.Y.\/Sacred Heart) who finished the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:14.90. Following shortly behind McGuire was senior co-captain Laura Sytnyk (Nutley, N.J.\/Mount St. Dominic) who took second with a time of 2:16.47. <\/p>\n
Junior diver Katie Oldham (Verdi, Nev.\/McQueen) took two first place finishes when she won the one and three meter diving events. Sophomore Jessica Rettig (Palm Harbor, Fla.\/Palm Harbor Univ. High) took second place in both events.<\/p>\n
For the men, sophomore diver Michael McWilliams (Potomac, Md.\/Gonzaga High) took first in the one and three meter diving events with 177.30 and 225.45 points, respectively. Freshman James LiVolsi (Scotch Plains, N.J.\/St. Peter's Prep) took first place in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:18.17. Fellow freshmen Eric Mooney (Absecon, N.J.\/Holy Spirit) and Brian Koh (Rowland Heights, Calif.\/Damien) also placed first in the 50 freestyle and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Rounding out the first place finishes was sophomore Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif.\/William S. Hart) in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.86.<\/p>\n
Five Hoyas qualified for the BIG EAST Championship today. Stark qualified in the women's 200 freestyle and 200 breaststroke while Alito qualified in the 50 freestyle. The third female to qualify was freshman Margaret Kimball (Baltimore, Md.\/Bryn Mawr) in the 200 backstroke.
