NEW YORK, New York, October 17. THE Women's Sports Foundation honored Shane Gould during induction ceremonies at the Foundation's 27th Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.<\/p>\n

"I am honored and thrilled to receive this award," Gould said. "I thank the Women's Sports Foundation for its recognition of my athletic career and for its support of female athletes around the world." <\/p>\n

Gould started swimming at 3, and began her international career at 13 when she started training for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. There, she became the Australian Olympic swimming champion, winning five medals (3 G, 1S, 1B). <\/p>\n

Before competing in an Olympic arena, 15-year-old Gould set world records in all five internationally recognized freestyle distances: the 100m (April 1971 and January 1972), 200m (May and November 1971), 400m (July 1971), 800m (December 1971) and 1,500m (December 1971). During that same time, Gould also was honored as the Caltex Sportsman of the Year (1971), Pravda Sportsman of the Year (1971), ABC Television Sportsman of the Year (1971 and 1972) and the Australian of the Year (1972).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
