BALTIMORE, Maryland, October 14. THE Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated George Washington and Catholic while falling to Navy in their season-opening meet at Mangione Aquatic Center on Saturday. <\/p>\n
"This is a great way to start our season," said Loyola Head Coach Brian Loeffler. "I am extremely happy how we swam today, coming away with two wins of the men and women." <\/p>\n
Both the men and women had their share of big wins and solid results such as freshman Megan Meyer's school record in the 100-yard butterfly. The Reeser brothers led the men's squad with wins in the freestyle events. Senior Ryan Reeser captured the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.72, ahead of teammates Zachary Oster and Patrick Hicks, who placed fifth and sixth respectively in the event. <\/p>\n
Freshman Brad Reeser won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.83 with senior Drew Crampton close behind in third place with a time of 21.95. The Reeser bothers then teamed up with Crampton and junior Paul Ebert to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:13.87. <\/p>\n
In the 100-yard freestyle, Crampton placed second (48.43) while Brad Reeser took third (48.47). Ryan Reeser finished second in the 500-yard freestyle for the Greyhounds. <\/p>\n
The Loyola men took second, third and fourth in the 200-yard IM with Oster leading that pack in 2:03.90. Freshman Ernest Verrico was third (2:04.80) and Hicks finished fourth. Verrico also posted a good result in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing fourth in 1:01.62 – only 1.3 seconds out of first place. <\/p>\n
The women's effort was highlighted by freshman Megan Meyer's record-setting performance in the 100-yard buttefly.Meyer's time of 59.97 broke a 12-year Loyola record in the event. <\/p>\n
Other highlights included freshman Megan Royer's first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Royer clocked in at 24.88 while sophomore Victoria Kamauff took fifth in 26.30. <\/p>\n
Senior Megan Sterback was also victorious, placing first on the 3-meter board with a score of 228.70. Freshman Diver Alexandra Coletta finished second in the event. <\/p>\n
The Greyhound women had a slew of second-place finishes including freshmen Meyer and Melissa White, who had two. Meyer placed second in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events.<\/p>\n
White led a 2-4-5 Loyola finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:16.31. Meyer was third and senior Michelle Ryan took fifth. White also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:01.07. <\/p>\n
Junior Megan Hadley was second in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:06,12), ahead of freshman Megan Shovlin, who was third (11:09.63). Kamauff took second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:01.93 and later teamed up with Royer, sophomore Emily Benton and sophomore Sarah Birkenmeier to take second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. <\/p>\n
Other notables on the women's side included senior Liz Chlebda's fourth-place showing in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, Hadley's third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and senior Jennie Zohorsky's third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. <\/p>\n
"Coming into the meet I figured the George Washington meet would be close for both teams. Our men and women are swimming very well for the first meet of the season," said Loeffler.
