PHOENIX, Arizona, October 13. IN an unprecedented move, the United States Olympic Committee recently weighed in on the fight to save 10 sports from the chopping block at James Madison University. This is the first time that the prestigious organization has ever entered into a fight to save a collegiate program.<\/p>\n
In a letter to both JMU president Linwood H. Rose and athletics director Jeff Bourne dated Oct. 12, the USOC lays out the faulty reasoning behind the cuts:<\/p>\n
“It is well documented that the spirit of the Title IX law is to ensure opportunities for participation in sport are proportional and fair for men and women. The intent of the law is not to discontinue sport programs for men or to eliminate Olympic sports from a university’s athletic program.”<\/p>\n
The organization also offers to help JMU find ways around the impending cuts.<\/p>\n
“The leaders of the National Governing Bodies for the sports you plan to discontinue, in addition to the United States Olympic Committee, would welcome the opportunity to work with you in identifying viable alternatives to keep these intercollegiate sports alive at James Madison University.”<\/p>\n
