CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, Otcober 11. NORTH Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell in their season openers Wednesday at Koury Natatorium against the University of Georgia. The Georgia women defeated the Tar Heels 169-126 and the Georgia men whipped the Tar Heels 173-125.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe kids did a great job,\u201d Georgia head swimming coach Jack Bauerle said. \u201cI was really pleased with the way they raced today. We\u2019re excited about being 1-0. UNC is always a formidable ACC opponent, so this is a nice way to start the season.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Bulldog women were led by three-event winner Kara Lynn Joyce who won the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Alek Putra was the winner in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. Four different Georgia men's swimmers won two or more events. Sebastien Rouault won the 500- and 1000-yard freestyles and the 400-yard individual medley. Gil Stovall won both butterfly events, Neil Versfeld won both breaststroke events and Nathan Bibliowicz won both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles.<\/p>\n
Carolina won five individual events on the women's side. Carolina junior Lindsey Marck was a double winner for coach Frank Comfort's team as she won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.31 and the 200-yard butterfly in 2:03.51.
\nCarolina\u00b9s 400-yard freestyle relay also came up victorious as Megan Steeves, Eliza Butts, Kelsey Morrissy and Aubrette Biegel touched first in 3:26.70. UNC's other winners were senior Lauren Karatanevski in one-meter diving (246.38) and junior Kelly Woodruff in the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.80).<\/p>\n
Junior Ryan Funderburk swept the diving events for the Carolina men.
\nFunderburk scored 307.65 points on the one-meter board and 340.43 on the three-meter board. Freshman Jeff James won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:49.30 and the Tar Heels\u00b9 400-yard freestyle relay also prevailed in 3:04.99.
