SAN JOSE, California, September 27. BOBBY Mattin has been named the assistant coach for the San Jose State University women\u2019s swimming and diving program. Chris Michelmore also joined the staff as a volunteer assistant.<\/p>\n
Mattin comes to San Jose State from Salem State College in Salem, Mass., where he had been the head swimming and diving coach for the NCAA Division III program since 2003. During three-plus seasons at his alma mater, Mattin\u2019s responsibilities included the training of each student-athlete, recruiting, hiring and overseeing assistant coaches, managing community service programs and running fund-raising programs, including camps and swim lessons. <\/p>\n
Mattin spent this past summer as an instructor at the University of Texas Longhorn swim camp in Austin, Texas, working closely with men\u2019s U.S. Olympic team head coach Eddie Reese. He began his coaching career by spending a little more than a year training and coaching at the Mission Valley YMCA in San Diego, Calif. He has also worked as the aquatic director and the head swim coach at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston for two years, where he founded the Chelsea Swim Club, and as a State of California ocean lifeguard for one year. <\/p>\n
At Salem State, Mattin received his bachelor of science degree in fire protection engineering in 2004. He is currently taking a hiatus from pursuing a second degree in fitness and leisure studies. He has American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 3 certification. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are thrilled and excited to have Bobby on board,\u201d head coach Sage Hopkins said. \u201cIt's great to receive the support from the athletic department that enables us to bring in a coach that has great head coaching and recruiting experience. He has been able to step in and immediately contribute to the program, both on and off the pool deck. His addition is going to help us expand our recruiting efforts, and will help us continue to improve in the conference standings.\u201d <\/p>\n
For San Jose State, Mattin will work with all swimmers, but primarily with the distance freestyle and individual medley groups. He will also coordinate recruiting and help with team travel. <\/p>\n
Michelmore graduated this past June from Cal Poly, earning a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was a four-year swimmer for the NCAA Division I program. A team captain from 2004-06, Michelmore finished third in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at the Big West Conference Championship in 2003, 2005 and 2006. San Jose State will constitute Michelmore\u2019s first major college coaching experience. He has ASCA Level 2 certification. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe was a tremendous swimmer at Cal Poly, a great leader for them who brought enthusiasm and experience as a student-athlete,\u201d Hopkins said. \u201cHe will be a great benefit to our program.\u201d <\/p>\n
