NEWPORT NEWS – Davidson\u2019s Luke Burton and Fordham\u2019s Megan Polaha were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men\u2019s & Women\u2019s Swimming & Diving Performers of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored were Fordham\u2019s Liam Semple, who was named the Men\u2019s Rookie of the Week, and Richmond\u2019s Laura Rokop, who was named the Women\u2019s Rookie of the Week. Awards were based off meet performances from Jan. 12- 18.<\/p>\n
Burton, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., had a record-breaking day against Georgetown and George Washington this past weekend. The junior was a part of both the 200-yd medley relay and 400-yd freestyle relay squads that set new pool records with times of 1:34.14 and 3:08.98 respectively. Burton continued his day with a victory in the 100-yd backstroke (50.66) and the 200-yd backstroke (1:51.32). Burton\u2019s time in the 200-yd backstroke was also a pool record.<\/p>\n
Polaha, a sophomore from Orefield, Pa., was instrumental in the Rams\u2019 dual meet victory against La Salle and Richmond. Polaha won three individual events over the weekend, the 200-yd butterfly (2:02.08), the 200-yd individual medley (2:05.85) and the 100-yd butterfly (55.51).<\/p>\n
Semple a freshman from San Diego, Calif., finished first in the 1,000-yd freestyle against Iona on Saturday with a time of 9:42,17. Semple also picked up a victory in the 200-yd freestyle (1:43.12) on Sunday against La Salle. He recorded second-place finishes in both the 100-yd freestyle (47.63) and the 500-yd freestyle (4:39.49) and was a part of the winning 400-yd freestyle relay team.<\/p>\n
Rokop, a freshman from Carmel, Ind., finished second in both the one meter and three meter springboards in Richmond\u2019s matchups against Fordham and La Salle this past weekend. Rokop\u2019s one meter diving score of 264.10 finished one point away from an NCAA Zone-qualifying score (30 points higher than her previous best). Rokop also improved on her previous best score and posted a score of 252.10 in the three meters. <\/p>\n
