BERKELEY, California, September 22. JOHAN Steiner has been hired as an assistant coach for the Golden Bears women's swimming team, Cal head coach Teri McKeever announced on Friday. A California alumnus who has been indirectly involved with McKeever's program, Steiner has coached at the club level and still competes in Masters swimming meets and in triathlons.<\/p>\n
Steiner, who served as the 2003 Pac-10 Championships Meet Director in Federal Way, Wash., replaces former assistant coach Whitney Hite, who left Berkeley to become the head coach of the men's and women's swimming programs at the University of Washington.<\/p>\n
Most recently a computer resource specialist at Cal, Steiner graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in psychology in 1987. He was a head coach with the Temescal Masters club (late 1980s) and an assistant coach with the Golden Bear Swim Club (1986-89).<\/p>\n
"There's an energy about Johan that makes you feel good about who you are," McKeever said. "Johan has a passion for Cal and helping young people achieve personal excellence. Someone who has that type of energy, that's the type of person I want to be around."<\/p>\n
The product of San Jose, Calif., is an avid sports fan and competitive athlete. He starred in the 2005 Long Course Masters Nationals, taking second place in the 200 butterfly and second place in the 400 individual medley. Steiner also took first place in the 2.4-mile swim leg of the 2003 Ironman Lake Placid.<\/p>\n
Steiner has assisted McKeever's program and the Cal Media Relations department by compiling statistical data of Bears swimmers in recent years.<\/p>\n
