BELEM, Brazil, September 19. FINA concluded its 15th stop in the Marathon Open Water Swimming World Cup series which began on Feb. 12 in Parana, Argentina and will end on Oct. 15 in Setbual, Portugal.<\/p>\n
Men\u2019s 10k<\/b>
\nMark Warkentin won the event by over a minute finishing in one hour, 26 minutes and 49 seconds. The fight for second place was not so clear cut, however, as a mere two seconds separated second and fourth place. Peter Stoychev captured second (1:27.55), edging out Stephen Gomez by just one second (1:27.55). Luiz Lima, winner of the five-kilometer event, exited the water in fourth place (1:27.57).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current was going very fast at our backs for 3\/4 race,\u201d Warkentin said. \u201cSmall swells would overtake us from behind and if you sped up just a little you could body surf for a second. I used this tactic to pull away from the field. I would swim moderate between swells and then sprint for a split second and catch the wave. It was a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
Men\u2019s 5k<\/b>
\nThe race for first was a tight one as Luiz Lima captured the win (42:18) by a mere two seconds. Allan do Carmo, a17-year-old youngster, finished the race in 42 minutes and 20 seconds. Fabio Lima, the 2003 champion, finished third (42:22) while Carlos Pavao, the 2001 and 2002 winner, placed fourth (42:54).<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s 5k<\/b>
\nThe women\u2019s race was not so close, as Ana Marcela took the lead early in the event, holding on to win by more than a minute (44:33). The 2005 defending champion finished second in the event, with a time of 45 minutes and 33 seconds. Marina Berti claimed third (45:33) with Bruna Cavalcante coming out of the water 33 seconds later to capture fourth place. <\/p>\n
Women\u2019s 10k<\/b>
\nThis year marked the first year women have participated in the ten-kilometer event. They proved to be successful, as the first woman came out of the water closely behind the men. Britta Kamrau-Corestier captured the title with a time of one hour, 28 minutes and 19 seconds. Exiting nearly half of a minute later was Angela Maurer (1:28.51). Tying for third place was Ana Marcela Cunha and Pamela Engel, who both finished in one hour, 30 minutes and 51 seconds. <\/p>\n
The next stop in the World Cup series takes place on Saturday in Xin Jinhe, China. The series then heads down the home stretch with an Oct. 1 date in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong and an Oct. 8 swim in Singapore before its final meet in Portugal a month from now.<\/p>\n
