CHARLOTTESVILLE – Becca Corbett set a new school record in women’s 3-meter diving and Courtney Bartholomew lowered the pool record in the women’s 200 back to give the Virginia women’s swimming and diving team a 120-66 lead over Virginia Tech after day one of their two-day meet. The Virginia Tech men lead 114-72 heading into tomorrow’s events.<\/p>\n

The Virginia men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving teams won 12 events on the first day against Virginia Tech Friday (Jan. 16) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.<\/p>\n

After the first day, UVa\u2019s women lead, 120-66, while Virginia Tech\u2019s men lead, 114-72.<\/p>\n

The entire diving portion of the meet was contested Friday, as junior Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) broke the school record in women\u2019s 3-meter diving, placing first with a score of 325.50. On the men\u2019s side, senior JB Kolod (Pittsburg, Pa.) swept the 3-meter (406.20) and 1-meter (376.05) events.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a solid meet today,\u201d head diving coach Jason Glorius said. \u201cI think we competed well and continued to focus on corrections during the competition. We have been training hard all year and we are looking good going into the championship season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Junior Courtney Bartholomew led a 1-2-3 sweep for UVa in the women\u2019s 200 back, winning in an AFC pool record 1:54.30. Freshman Jennifer (Westford, Mass.) placed second in 1:59.59, while senior Emily Dicus was third in 2:00.48.<\/p>\n

The Cavaliers also completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the women\u2019s 200 IM Bartholomre leading the way in 2:00.96. Sophomore Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) was second in 2:01.07, while senior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) was third in 2:01.33.<\/p>\n

Junior Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) captured the women\u2019s 500 free in 4:45.80, while junior Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.) placed third in 4:56.99. In the men\u2019s 500 free, sophomore Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) touched second in 4:30.48.<\/p>\n

The Cavaliers swept the 100 breast, with sophomore Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) winning the women\u2019s event in 1:01.01, while junior Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) claimed the men\u2019s event in 55.61.<\/p>\n

In the women\u2019s 100 free, sophomore Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom) touched first in a time of 51.04, while Borgersen was second in 51.38.<\/p>\n

On the men\u2019s side, sophomore Matt Lockman (Charlotteville, Va.) won in a time of 45.70, while freshman Nicholas Magana (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was third in 46.35.<\/p>\n

In the women\u2019s 200 fly, Williamson touched second in 2:00.55, while Jones was third in 2:00.97.<\/p>\n

Freshman Henrik Pohlmann (Beavercreek, Ohio) placed third in the men\u2019s 200 IM in 1:53.36, while fellow freshman Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif.) was third in the men\u2019s 200 back in 1:48.67.<\/p>\n

In the relays, the women\u2019s team of sophomore Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa.), Thomas, freshman Caitlin Cooper (Atlanta, Ga.) and Williamson won the 200 free relay in 1:32.76, while the 400 medley team of Bartholomew, Simon, Williamson and Thomas won in 3:40.26. The men\u2019s 200 free relay of Lockman, senior Charlie Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.), Magana and senior Jake Pearce (Tulsa, Okla.) placed second in 1:22.76, while the 400 medley relay of sophomore Zach Bunner (Marietta, Ga.), Kaeser, Quinn and Lockman also touched second in 3:20.46.<\/p>\n

The action continues tomorrow at the AFC at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n

The Virginia Tech swimming & diving teams completed the first day of competition against rival Virginia on Friday with the men holding a 114-72 lead and the women trailing by 120-66.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a real strong start tonight,\u201d head coach Ned Skinner said. \u201cThe men were very sharp, and I am impressed by their desire to race. We had many men step up and help the cause. It\u2019s swimmers like Ben Borgert that make this men\u2019s team special. The women raced a very strong Virginia team tough tonight. Kaylea Arnett and Klaudia Nazieblo getting big wins for us were great moments, and Jess Hespeler continues to emerge as a superstar for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s Meet<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Tech women\u2019s team (7-2) had their hands full against the sixth-ranked Virginia squad, but a few H2Okies picked up big wins in a tough meet.<\/p>\n

Before the swimming began, Kaylea Arnett won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 323.40 and Kelli Stockton finished behind her in second with a score of 295.05. In the 3-meter, Stockton took second after posting a score of 324.30 and Ashley Buchter took third with a score of 323.02 with Arnett and Villarreal in the fourth and fifth spots.<\/p>\n

The swimming began with the 200 free relay where Tech\u2019s A-team finished second and third. A few races later, Jessica Hespeler finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.62. In the 100 breast, Alyssa Bodin took second, Weronika Paluszek took third and Blaire Kinsey took fourth.<\/p>\n

Tech picked up it\u2019s first swimming win of the day when Klaudia Nazieblo won the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.91.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s Meet<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 12th-ranked H2Okie men\u2019s team (8-1) finished the day holding a commanding lead over No. 21 Virginia (1-3).<\/p>\n

The day began with the 1-meter diving event, where Thomas Shinholser finished second with a score of 356.93 and Jared Butts finished third with a score of 336.52. In the 3-meter, Butts earned second with a score of 373.20 and Mauro Castro-Silva came in third, followed by Shinholser and Logan Stevens in fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n

In the first swimming event, the 200 free relay, Tech finished first and third before Brandon Fiala picked up a win (1:49.56) in the 200 IM with Owen Burns right behind him in second.<\/p>\n

Michal Szuba earned the win in the 500 free, touching the wall after 4:29.38, and Jake Ores took the third spot. Collin Higgins earned another win for Tech in the 200 back with a time of 1:46.19, and Robert Owen finished as the runner-up.<\/p>\n

Morgan Latimer once again dominated the 200 fly, finishing in 1:46.93 with Chris Wang taking the third spot.<\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s portion of the meet concluded with the 400 medley relay, where Tech, again, finished first and third.<\/p>\n
