PHOENIX, Arizona, August 23. ONE of the top Paralympic swimmers in history, Jessica Long is among the nominees for the Women\u2019s Sports Foundation\u2019s Sportswoman of the Year Award. Long is one of 10 women vying for the individual-sport honor. The foundation will also present an award to a female athlete in a team sport.<\/p>\n
The nominees were chose based on their accomplishments between August 1, 2005 and July 31, 2006. This year, 56 athletes were nominated by a variety of governing bodies and federations and the list was whittled down to 10. The competition Long is battling for the award includes golfer Annika Sorenstam and tennis player Amelie Mauresmo.<\/p>\n
At the 2005 United States Paralympics Open Championships, Long established world records in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and registered five American and Pan-American marks. She also took down world records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 I.M. at the Georgia Open, where she also collected a quartet of American standards. <\/p>\n
Long continued her record-breaking ways in May at the Belgian Open, where she turned in world-record performances in the 100 fly and 200 I.M., in addition to an American and Pan-American mark in the 100 backstroke. She followed with world records in the 1,500 free and 200 free at the Toledo Aquatic Club Disability Open. From August 2005 and July 2006, Long produced 25 American records, 21 Pan-American marks and 12 world records.<\/p>\n
