﻿{"id":118765,"date":"2015-01-02T20:19:24","date_gmt":"2015-01-03T03:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=118765"},"modified":"2015-01-02T20:19:24","modified_gmt":"2015-01-03T03:19:24","slug":"queens-university-charlotte-swimming-sweeps-lenoir-rhyne-kick-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/queens-university-charlotte-swimming-sweeps-lenoir-rhyne-kick-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Queens University of Charlotte Swimming Sweeps Lenoir-Rhyne to Kick Off 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Photo Credit: Kyle Staggs<\/p>\n<p>HICKORY &#8211; The Queens University of Charlotte swimming and diving teams swept Lenoir-Rhyne, while the women&#8217;s team also competed against UNC Asheville in an exhibition matchup Friday afternoon in the team&#8217;s first meet of the new year.<\/p>\n<h2>Queens Men&#8217;s Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>Starting a new year with a dominating performance, Queens University of Charlotte men&#8217;s swim team faced-off against Lenoir-Rhyne University on Friday, January 2, 2015, taking the meet 180-65. Queens rallied to take first place in the 13 events they competed in during the dual competition.<\/p>\n<p>In commenting on the team&#8217;s spectacular performance, Head Coach Jeff Dugdale stated, &#8220;It was great to get back to racing today. It is nice to start the new year off with a couple of wins. We will use the rest of January to sharpen up and get ready for our conference meet and NCAAs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Starting with the 200 Medley Relay, Zachary Phelps, William Hicks, II, Felipe de Oliveira, and Evante Gibson, respectfully, took hold of the event with an electrifying 1:38.57 time.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Shackley followed up for the Royals with a win in the 1000 Freestyle taking the event with a 10:13.74. Kyle Kemp drove to the wall, taking second for the 1-2 Queens finish with a 10:16.70. The pair took the event by over 45 seconds with third place finishing to the wall at 11:04.69.<\/p>\n<p>It was all Queens in the 200 Freestyle as John Suther, Jackson Kojima, and Shackley rounded the top three spots, with Suther&#8217;s time of 1:47.61 taking the event. Kojima would finish with a 1:50.91 and Shackley with a 1:52.22 to give the Royals the 1-2-3 finish.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps clocked a 54.61 in the 100 Backstroke as Jay Stancliff finished second in the race touching with a 55.94.<\/p>\n<p>It would be another Queens&#8217; event, this time in the 100 Breaststroke, as Devyn Hughes and Hicks took the top two spots with a 1:00.83 and 1:01.29 time, respectfully. Both had over four seconds separating them from the Bears.<\/p>\n<p>To add to the day, Oliveira held off Lenoir-Rhyne in the 200 Butterfly touching the wall with a 2:00.53 as Gibson reached the top of the 50 Freestyle with a 22.85 finish.<\/p>\n<p>Suther&#8217;s time of 48.79 and Kojima&#8217;s 50.53 time grabbed hold of the 100 Freestyle as Queens took another 1-2 finish for the day. To partner with his first, Suther immediately took to the lanes for a second place finish (2:03.06) in the 200 Backstroke following teammate Phelps who took the event with a 2:00.45.<\/p>\n<p>Queens closed out the 200 Breaststroke once again with the top two spots. Oliveira took first with a 2:13.47 and Hughes placed second touching in a 2:14.34.<\/p>\n<p>With the meet nearing an end, Queens capped its last two events with spectacular performances in each. First with the 500 Freestyle, Kojima, Shackley, and Kemp, respectfully, dominated as Kojima took a 5:00.69, Shackley took a 5:02.86, and Kemp took a 5:04.78 for the race.<\/p>\n<p>Queens concluded with the 200 Individual Medley as Oliveira touched with a 2:02.97 finish. Hughes followed with a 2:04.93 for second place.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals continue their new year focus as they host St. Andrews University tomorrow in the Levine Aquatic Center at noon.<\/p>\n<h2>Queens Women&#8217;s Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>Queens University of Charlotte women&#8217;s swim team started the new year with a 194-54 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, January 2, 2015, as the Royals did not concede a single event to the Bears in the dual match-up. Even though the competition against UNC-Asheville was held as an exhibition, the Royals saw eight overall first place finishes for the day.<\/p>\n<p>In commenting on the team&#8217;s spectacular performance, Head Coach Jeff Dugdale stated, &#8220;It was great to get back to racing today. It is nice to start the new year off with a couple of wins. We will use the rest of January to sharpen up and get ready for our conference meet and NCAAs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Royals started the 2015 year off with a win in the 200 Medley Relay hoisting Hannah Peiffer, Emma Durante, Madeleine Wallmon, and Kristina Kosloski, respectfully, to the top of the event. The group put together a 1:50.72 for the fastest time of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Arakelian&#8217;s time of 10:43.48 garnered a first place finish for the 1000 Freestyle. McKenzie Stevens followed this up with a first place finish in the 200 Freestyle touching with a 1:59.27.<\/p>\n<p>Looking to the 100 Backstroke, Queens took a 1-2 finish as Kristin Diemer drove to the wall with a 1:01.92 and Kristina Kosloski grabbed a 1:02.41.<\/p>\n<p>Peiffer and Linda Baron emerged victories in the 200 Butterfly as Peiffer sat atop with a 2:13.73. Baron followed reaching the wall at 2:15.68.<\/p>\n<p>Kosloski found her way to the wall first in the 200 Backstroke reaching for a time of 2:12.23 as Arakelian dominated the 200 Breaststroke finish seven seconds faster than her competition with a 2:27.63.<\/p>\n<p>Wallmon&#8217;s performance in the 100 Butterfly landed her first for the day while taking a 1:1.61 for the event. Arakelian followed this up for the last individual first place finish of the day in the 200 Individual Medley clocking a 2:11.75. She would be 10 seconds faster than the pool.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals concluded the day with the overall finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay clocking a 1:40.19 with Diemer, Arakelian, Kosloski, and Peiffer, respectfully, taking the pool. However, Emily Bozant, Stevens, Leigh Siegfried, and Hannah Veale, respectfully, gave Queens a 1-2 finish with their powering 1:45.51 time.<\/p>\n<p>Although the two teams did not face off, UNC-Asheville&#8217;s Alessandra Troncoso found the wall first in the 100 Breaststroke as Durante nudged into second place with a 1:10.39. UNC-Asheville also found first in the 50 Freestyle but Queens took the next three touches with Veale (25.89), Diemer (25.89), and Bozant (25.92), respectfully, soaring through the water.<\/p>\n<p>Again not competing against the school, Wallmon finished second behind Alexandra Van Dorsten of UNC-Asheville to give Queens the points in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 57.05. Braelyn Tracy also took second in the 500 Freestyle behind UNC-Asheville with a 5:19.38 to give Queens the race in their dual match against the Bears.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals continue their new year focus as they host St. Andrews University tomorrow in the Levine Aquatic Center at noon.<\/p>\n<h2>Lenoir-Rhyne Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>In their lone home meet of the season, the Lenoir-Rhyne Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s Swimming Teams fell to UNC Asheville and Queens Friday afternoon at the Shuford Physical Education Center.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s dual meet with second-ranked Queens, the Bears fell by a score of 180-65. On the women\u2019s side, Lenoir-Rhyne came up short against both UNC Asheville (214-44) and Queens (194-54). The Royals are also ranked second in NCAA Division II in women\u2019s swimming as well.<\/p>\n<p>Lenoir-Rhyne junior Abigail McRea (Hickory, N.C.) finished second in the women\u2019s 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:21.94.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, freshman Noah McRea (Hickory, N.C.) and senior Chris Tilque (Charlotte, N.C.) placed second in the men\u2019s 200-yard butterfly and the men\u2019s 50-yard freestyle with times of 2:03.26 and 22.90, respectively.<br \/>\nLenoir-Rhyne also won the men\u2019s 200-yard freestyle relay in the last event of the day.<\/p>\n<p>The Lenoir-Rhyne Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s Swimming Teams will next compete against Catawba in a dual meet on Saturday, January 17, in Salisbury, N.C., beginning at 2:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><a
