The six-meet 2013-14 Arena Grand Prix series kicked off Nov. 14-16\u00a0in Minneapolis and continued\u00a0through June. Swimmers had\u00a0the\u00a0opportunity to compete for $150,000 in\u00a0overall prize money, with the highest-scoring\u00a0eligible U.S. male and female\u00a0swimmers (Conor Dwyer, Caitlin Leverenz) receiving a one-year lease of\u00a0a BMW\u00a0activehybrid 3 series.<\/p>\n

It may look like it, but, no, Kentucky\u2019s Greg Ferrucci is not resting on a\u00a0water bed! he\u2019s still in midair as he performs\u00a0a dive during the 1-meter springboard\u00a0competition at the 2013 NCAA Division I\u00a0championships. He finished fourth as a\u00a0junior last year in all three diving events.<\/p>\n

No matter how you\u00a0look at him, Brazil\u2019s Cesar Cielo is\u00a0head-and-shoulders ahead of his\u00a0competition in the 50 meter free. he\u00a0became the first person in history\u00a0to win three consecutive world\u00a0championship titles in the event at\u00a0last summer\u2019s meet in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

The men’s 5K race at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships finished about as close as the Start, June 15, at Castaic Lake in Southern California. \u00a0In a photo finish, 2012 Olympian Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) touched out Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif.) and Joey Pedraza (Broward, Fla.) for the victory.<\/p>\n

At the U.S. Nationals in Irvine, swimmer Tyler Clary accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that was\u00a0all the rage on social media. Started by a Massachusetts resident who has lived with ALS since 2012, numerous celebrities and others dumped ice water on themselves and posted videos of it within 24 hours – all to raise money for research into ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.<\/p>\n

Legendary coach Peter Daland passed away Oct. 20 at the age of 93 of Alzheimer’s disease. \u00a0While coaching the men’s swimming team at the University of Southern California for 35 years (1958-92), the Trojans captured nine NCAA team titles. \u00a0He also coached the U.S. Women’s Olympic team in 1964 and the men’s in 1972. \u00a0Daland, shown here on the cover of Swimming World Magazine (June 1992) upon his retirement from USC, also was the Magazine’s co-founder in 1952 along with Robert J.H. Kiphuth.<\/p>\n
