IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 9. FAST times were plenty during the hump day of the 2006 Speedo USA Swimming Junior National Championships in Irvine, Calif., on Wednesday. Overall, 20 Olympic Trial cuts went in the books during the third day of finals competition.<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s 200-meter Freestyle<\/b>
\nArizona Desert Fox Katherine Raatz came close to wiping out the meet record in the 200 free with an Olympic Trial cut of 2:01.55, which stood just .36 seconds off the record of 2:01.19 set last year by 2006 runner-up Chelsea Nauta of Tampa Bay Aquatics. Nauta touched in a silver-winning time of 2:02.03, which also cleared the Olympic Trial threshold. Club Wolverine\u2019s Allison Schmitt closed out the top three in 2:02.29.<\/p>\n
Notably, the top six swimmers posted Olympic Trial cuts, while West Florida\u2019s Claire Thompson notched an Olympic Trial cut of 2:03.24 to win the consolation heat.<\/p>\n
Men\u2019s 200-meter Freestyle<\/b>
\nA trio of swimmers cleared not only the Olympic Trial cut, but also the previous meet standard of 1:52.50 set by Falcon Swim Club\u2019s Cody Weik last year. Longhorn Aquatics\u2019 Titus Knight touched first in 1:51.74 for the record, while Fast Swim Team\u2019s Scott Clary placed second in 1:51.86. Corvallis Aquatics\u2019 Logan Storie earned bronze in 1:52.21.<\/p>\n
In the consolation heat, Weik clocked an Olympic Trial cut of 1:52.56 to win the race. That effort would have put Weik in fourth in the big final. Overall, four swimmers garnered Olympic Trial cuts.<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s 400-meter IM<\/b>
\n14-year-old Natalie Adams of Fleet Swimming ripped off an Olympic Trial cut of 4:53.11 to capture the 400 IM junior national title. Meanwhile, Nova of Virginia\u2019s Lauren Beaudreau clocked a 4:53.44 for second place, while Swim Pasadena\u2019s Samantha Vanden Berge finished in third with a 4:53.72.<\/p>\n
Notably, six swimmers recorded Olympic Trial cuts.<\/p>\n
Men\u2019s 400-meter IM<\/b>
\nAces Swim Club\u2019s Mark Dylla came home with gold in the 400 IM with an Olympic Trial cut of 4:27.57. Additionally, Nova of Virginia\u2019s William Harris picked up silver in 4:28.98, while Dallas Mustang Matthew Thompson garnered bronze in 4:29.94. All three competitors notched Olympic Trial cuts.<\/p>\n
Women\u2019s 800-meter Freestyle Relay<\/b>
\nClub Wolverine\u2019s team of Elizabeth Koselka, Kristyne Cole, Adrienne Woods and Allison Schmitt brought the trophy home in the 800 free relay with an 8:19.65. Meanwhile, Arizona Desert Fox\u2019s contingent of Ashley Evans, Alexandra Clarke, Jaclyn Puschak and Katherine Raatz snared silver in 8:21.50. Finally, The Bolles School\u2019s squad of Erica Totten, Sarah Sykes, Kathryn Casey and Madison Parker grabbed bronze in 8:22.12.<\/p>\n
Men\u2019s 800-meter Freestyle Relay<\/b>
\nFast Swim Team\u2019s squad of Isaac Howell, Matthew Waggoner, Christopher Na and Tyler Clary lived up to its name with a quick 7:42.77 for first. Meanwhile, Mecklenburg Aquatic Club continued the Dave Gibson farewell tour as Mason Brunnick, Ryan Marklewitz, Marc Greenberg and Thomas Santoli took silver in 7:42.90.
