STANFORD, Calif., Aug. 9. AFTER watching swimmers from the United States claim the bulk of the world records throughout the first five days of the 2006 FINA World Masters Championships held at the Belardi and Baker pools at the Avery Aquatic Center on the campus of Stanford University, the field of international competitors countered during day six with various global standards. The most impressive may have belonged to Japan\u2019s Goro Kobayashi, 90, who set the men\u2019s 90-94 100-meter backstroke record. <\/p>\n
World Records broken are as follows:
\nUnited States\u2019 Michael Ross broke the men\u2019s 35-39 100-meter backstroke record of 59.91 previously held by countryman Eric Ericson since 2000 with a 59.18.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Sheri Hart broke the women\u2019s 35-39 100-meter backstroke record of 1:06.29 previously held by countrywoman Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen since 1998 with a 1:06.04.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Susan Preston broke the women\u2019s 40-44 200-meter fly record of 2:25.69 previously held by countrywoman Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen since 2003 with a 2:25.15.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Susan Von Der Lippe broke the women\u2019s 40-44 200-meter breaststroke record of 2:42.06 previously held by countrywoman Caroline Krattli in 2002 with a 2:38.44.<\/p>\n
A pair of swimmers (Dennis Baker and Marcus Mattioli) cleared the men\u2019s 45-49 200-meter fly record of 2:10.97 previously held by United States\u2019 Paul Carter since 2002. Baker, however, touched first in 2:06.94.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Steve Wood broke the men\u2019s 45-49 100-meter backstroke record of 1:02.62 previously held by countryman Fritz Lehman since 2003 with a 1:01.73.<\/p>\n
Belarus\u2019 Vera Capkova broke the women\u2019s 45-49 100-meter backstroke record of 1:12.69 previously held by Britain\u2019s Lesley Wilde since 2004 with a 1:11.20.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 David Guthrie broke the men\u2019s 45-49 200-meter breaststroke record of 2:34.14 he set in 2005 with a 2:31.42.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Jim McConica broke his own men\u2019s 55-59 200-meter fly record of 2:29.80 set last year with a 2:28.62.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Gary Hall broke the men\u2019s 55-59 100-meter backstroke record of 1:07.81 previously held by countryman Hugh Wilder since 2002 with a 1:06.16.<\/p>\n
France\u2019s Benedicte Duprez broke the women\u2019s 55-59 100-meter backstroke record of 1:17.51 previously held by United States\u2019 Betty Barnett-Sallee since 2002 with a 1:17.21.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Richard Burns broke the men\u2019s 60-64 100-meter backstroke record of 1:11.96 he set in 2003 with a 1:11.89.<\/p>\n
Barnett-Sallee picked a record right back with the women\u2019s 60-64 100-meter backstroke as she touched in 1:18.19 to clear the 1:20.43 recorded by Japan\u2019s Satoko Takeuji in 2002.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Robert Strand broke the men\u2019s 60-64 200-meter breaststroke record of 2:55.26 previously held by Israel\u2019s Gershon Shefa since 2004 with a 2:51.93.<\/p>\n
Brazil\u2019s Luiz Figueiredo broke the men\u2019s 65-69 100-meter backstroke record of 1:16.78 previously held by Japan\u2019s Yoshi Oyakawa since 1999 with a 1:15.69.<\/p>\n
A pair of swimmers (Claudio Negri and Thomas Walker) cleared the men\u2019s 70-74 200-meter breaststroke record of 3:17.84 set by Walker in March. Negri, however, touched first in 3:12.92.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Thomas Maine broke his own men\u2019s 80-84 200-meter fly record of 3:54.66 with a 3:54.51.<\/p>\n
Russia\u2019s Olga Kokorina broke the women\u2019s 80-84 200-meter breaststroke record of 4:31.85 she set in 2004 with a 4:26.18.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Bunny Cederlund broke the women\u2019s 85-89 100-meter backstroke record of 2:10.44 previously held by Israel\u2019s Edith Thein since 2004 with a 2:06.41.<\/p>\n
United States\u2019 Betty Christian broke the women\u2019s 85-89 200-meter breaststroke record of 5:35.82 previously held by Japan\u2019s Michiko Hamuro in 2004 with a 5;27.60.<\/p>\n
