COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, August 9. USA Swimming has named the eight athletes who will represent the United States at the first FINA Youth World Championships Aug. 23-27 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The eight swimmers were selected from the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships, which concluded Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough a partnership with the United States Olympic Committee, USA Swimming is pleased to be sending this group of talented, young swimmers to compete in Rio de Janeiro,\u201d said Chuck Wielgus, executive director of USA Swimming. <\/p>\n
The eight swimmers selected represent seven states and range in age from 15-17 years old. Two swimmers represent the North Baltimore Aquatic Club in Ian Rowe (Towson, Md.) and Courtney Kalisz (Bel Air, Md.). Three swimmers join the team from the southwestern U.S. in Caitlin Leverenz (Tucson, Ariz.\/El Dorado Aquatics), Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif.\/Fast Swim Team) and Jessica Rodriquez (Aurora, Colo.\/Longhorn Aquatics). <\/p>\n
Rounding out the roster are Leah Gingrich (Enola, Pa.\/West Shore YMCA), Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.\/Northern Kentucky Clippers) and Matt Thompson (Dallas, Texas\/Dallas Mustangs). Richard Shoulberg (Fort Washington, Pa.\/Germantown Academy) will serve as head coach of the squad.<\/p>\n
The Championships will take place at the Sport Complex \u201cJulio de Lamare\u201d of Maracana. Each country may enter a maximum of two swimmers per event. All swimmers must be 17 years of age or under as of Dec. 31, 2006.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
