Darien picked up two wins at the meet, as the foursome of Rebecca Maroney, Phoebe Slaughter, Maggie Orem and Lauren Rutledge raced to a time of 1:47.16 in the 200 medley relay and senior Courtney Ferreira topped the 500 free in 5:02.94.

New Canaan, which finished third in the team standings, picked up state titles in four of the 12 events. Kylie Towbin set a new Open division and overall state record in 1-meter diving, scoring 521.75 points to crush Katherine Mattison’s 1997 Open (486.20) and state records (493.40). Meghan Egan earned a one-second victory in the 200 IM final, touching in 2:05.27 for the win. Egan then teamed up with Katie Colwell, Madeleine Smith and Caroline Sweeney to win the 200 free relay in 1:37.78. Canaan’s quartet of Egan, Katie Colwell, Elizabeth Colwell and Libby O’Hare crushed the Open (3:30.40) and state (3:30.16) records held by Greenwich in the final 400 free relay with a 3:27.56.

Ridgefield’s Marcella Maguire was the only double event winner of the meet, as she picked up state titles in the 100 free (50.84) and 100 back (55.27). Hall’s Tara Tiernan (200 free, 1:52.72), E.O. Smith’s Siobhan Dale (50 free, 23.88), Staples’ Amelia Bullock (100 fly, 56.07) and Cheshire’s Elizabeth Boyer (100 breast, 1:03.81) also swam away with individual state titles at the meet.

Class LL

Greenwich High School racked up 891 points to run away with the Class LL team title. Staples finished second with 537 points, while McMahon/Norwalk came in third with 469 points. Greenwich freshman Sophia Jahan had a meet to remember, taking home two state titles in her first state meet. Jahan posted a 1:54.60 in the 200 free, and later cruised to a 5:11.21 to win the 500 free over teammate Sarah Bellamy (5:14.35). Jahan joined Julia Merrill, Ainsleigh Winget and Kelly Montesi to win the 400 free relay in 3:37.18.

Ridgefield claimed four state titles at the meet, including two by sophomore Marcella Maguire. Maguire bested the field in the 100 free with a 51.81, then raced to a 55.87 in the 100 back. Maguire had set the Class LL record of 55.47 in prelims before finishing just off of that in finals. Maguire also led off Ridgefield’s winning 200 medley relay to open the meet, as she teamed up with Lindsey Gordon, Sophie Hayes and Isabelle Seward to finish in 1:48.14. Gordon picked up the fourth state title for Ridgefield with a 1:05.72 in the 100 breast.

Staples’ Amelia Bullock grabbed two individual titles for her team, as she paced the 200 IM final with a 2:05.28 and dominated the 100 fly with a three-second win in 55.18. Westhill/Stam’s Rachel Burston set a new Class LL record in the 1-meter diving final, scoring 475.30 points to take down her own record of 437.90 from earlier in the season.

Ludlowe’s Sarah Grinalds won the 50 free in 24.00, while the Newton foursome of Mary Hufziger, Eliza Eggleston, Amanda Mele and Amy Martinelli topped the 200 free relay in 1:38.35.

Class L

Darien High School cruised to the Class L team title, posting 815.5 points to finish comfortably ahead of New Canaan’s 570 points and Cheshire’s 547 points. Darien swam away with four state championship titles in the Class L meet, as Rebecca Maroney, Phoebe Slaughter, Maggie Orem and Lauren Rutledge kicked off the competition by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:47.90. Senior Courtney Ferreira pulled out a narrow victory in the 500 free, topping Hall’s Maria DiBella by just over a second 5:04.62. In the 100 back, Slaughter edged Maroney for the title, 58.46 to 59.39. Slaughter, Ferreira, Rutledge and Belle Stobbie closed out the meet with a new state and Class L record in the 400 free relay. Their 3:29.19 lowered Greenwich’s 2012 state record of 3:30.16 and New Canaan’s 2012 Class L record of 3:30.90.

New Canaan won half of the 12 events contested, but couldn’t match Darien’s outstanding depth. Katie Colwell got the ball rolling for New Canaan in the 200 free as she posted the fastest time in finals at 1:52.89. Meghan Egan then made it two wins in a row with her 2:04.28 in the 200 IM. Senior Kylie Towbin dominated the 1-meter diving final, setting a new Class L record with 467.80 points and winning by more than 70 points. Towbin owned the previous Class L record at 455.80. Egan picked up her second win of the day in the 100 fly, edging Cheshire’s Lindsay Smalec for the title, 56.57 to 56.67. Colwell also doubled up in her individual events, adding a win in the 100 free (51.16) to her victory in the 200 free earlier. New Canaan claimed the 200 free relay win as well, as Colwell, Egan, Madeleine Smith and Caroline Sweeney got to the wall first in 1:36.69.

Cheshire’s Elizabeth Boyer set a new Class L record in the 100 breast with a 1:03.73, lowering Olivia Leunis’ 2012 record of 1:04.63 by almost a second. E.O. Smith’s Siobhan Dale and Darien’s Lauren Rutledge posted matching 24.07s to share the 50 free title.

Class M

Lauralton Hall topped the Class M team standings with 605.5 points, just over 50 points in front of Wethersfield (553 points). East Lyme’s Hanna Suarez (1-meter diving, 390.75), Wethersfield’s Caroline Even (100 fly, 58.05) and SHA’s Jaime Robinson (500 free, 5:07.05) won the remaining individual events at the meet. SHA’s Nikki Robinson, Claire Anderson, Megan Duffy and Jaime Robinson won the final 400 free relay in 3:39.91.

Class S

Weston High School amassed 669.5 points to win the Class S team title over East Catholic (494 points) and Sacred Heart (392 points). Weston got their meet off to a great start as Kiersten Daly, Sophie Angus, Allison Pocsik and Carolyn Morikawa raced to a 1:50.03 in the 200 medley relay, only .03 off their own Class S record of 1:50.00 from earlier in the year. Three of the four medley relay swimmers added individual wins later in the meet, as Morikawa touched first in the 100 fly (57.46), Daly claimed the 500 free (5:10.22) and Angus topped the 100 breast (1:03.88). Angus’ time took almost two seconds off Aurora Lee’s 2005 Class S record of 1:05.68. Daly, Angus and Morikawa then joined Claire Kerns to win the 400 free relay in 3:41.77.

Westbrook’s Caitlin McNary went two-for-two in her individual events, stopping the clock at 1:53.49 in the 200 free and 58.08 in the 100 back.
