RIO DE JANEIRO – Bruno Fratus,\u00a0more of an extreme specialist with one of the fastest 50 frees in the world, demonstrated that he has\u00a0begun to stretch out to the 100 free with a win at Brazilian Nationals.<\/p>\n

Fratus’\u00a0aim is to help Brazil’s depth in the 400 free relay heading into hosting the 2016 Olympics.<\/p>\n

Today, he took another step towards that goal with a lifetime-best effort of 48.57. That swim elevated Fratus to 19th in the world rankings this year as Brazil has four of the top 20 100 free swimmers in the world this year. Cesar Cielo (48.13), Matheus Santana (48.25), and Joao de Lucca (48.67) also are ranked.<\/p>\n

Marcelo Chierighini took second in the 100 free with a 49.06, while Leonardo Alcover placed third in 49.59.<\/p>\n

Leonardo De Deus took down his Brazilian record in the men’s 400-meter free with a 3:50.37. \u00a0That’s better than his 3:50.71 from Brazilian Nationals in May, and just off Ricardo Monasterio’s 2003 South American record of 3:50.01.<\/p>\n

Miguel Valente (3:54.59) and Altamir Luiz Melo (3:55.07) joined him on the podium.<\/p>\n

Thiago Simon captured the men’s 200-meter breaststroke title in 2:12.01. \u00a0Tales Cerdeira hit the wall second in 2:14.55 with Felipe Franca placing third in 2:14.93.<\/p>\n

Daniel Orzechowski won the men’s 50-meter back in 25.12 with Guilherme Guido placing second in 25.30. \u00a0Fabio Santi touched third in 25.53.<\/p>\n

Gabriele Hermann topped the women’s 100-meter free in 55.03 with Larissa Oliveira taking second in 55.33. \u00a0Daiane Becker wound up third in 55.35.<\/p>\n

Pamela Alencar claimed the women’s 200-meter breast title in 2:35.35 with Thamy Ventorin earning second in 2:36.82. \u00a0Beatriz Travalon snared third in 2:37.73.<\/p>\n

Etienne Medeiros, the short course 50 back world record holder<\/a>, won the long course event in 29.33. Meanwhile, Natalia Diniz (30.27) and Roberta Albino (30.54) rounded out the podium.<\/p>\n

Joanna Maranhao snagged the women’s 200-meter IM crown in 2:14.03. \u00a0Fernanda Carobino (2:20.79) and Julia Volkmann (2:21.72) closed out the top three. Thiago Pereira won the men’s 200-meter IM in 2:00.12. Henrique Rodrigues touched second in 2:00.36 with Lucas Silva in third in 2:04.53.<\/p>\n

Jessica Cavalheiro turned in a 4:21.77 to win the women’s 400-meter free. Manuella Lyrio touched second in 4:22.63 with Ana Marcela Cunha taking third in 4:25.84.<\/p>\n
