{"id":117937,"date":"2014-12-19T10:05:07","date_gmt":"2014-12-19T17:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=117937"},"modified":"2014-12-19T10:40:53","modified_gmt":"2014-12-19T17:40:53","slug":"michael-phelps-pleads-guilty-dui-gets-suspended-one-year-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-pleads-guilty-dui-gets-suspended-one-year-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Phelps Guilty Of Driving Under The Influence, Gets Suspended One-Year Sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALTIMORE &#8211; Michael Phelps, <a title=\"Michael Phelps Charged With DUI In Baltimore, 39 MPH Over Speed Limit; Releases Statement\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-charged-with-dui-in-baltimore\/\" target=\"_blank\">who was arrested in Baltimore on a DUI charge on Sept. 30<\/a>,\u00a0plead guilty to DUI charges today in Baltimore court.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, <a title=\"USA Today Michael Phelps DUI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/2014\/12\/18\/michael-phelps-drunk-driving-charges-olympics\/20584171\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phelps drew a one-year-suspended sentence along with 18 months of supervised probation after his plea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps&#8217; supervised probation was modified to allow him to travel outside of the state and country as needed. \u00a0Additionally, Phelps has joined Alcoholic&#8217;s Anonymous.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps&#8217; longtime friend, former Baltimore Raven Ray Lewis, was in attendance to support Phelps throughout the quick court visit.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps, <a title=\"Michael Phelps\u2019 DUI Trial Date Gets One-Month Postponement\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-dui-trial-date-gets-one-month-postponement\/\" target=\"_blank\">who was originally scheduled to make the appearance a month ago<\/a>, faced charges of DUI, speeding and crossing double yellow lines after being stopped by Baltimore police in the Fort McHenry Tunnel after <a title=\"Report: Michael Phelps Spent Eight Hours In Casino Before DUI Arrest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-casino-dui-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\">an eight-hour run at the casino<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps was initially stopped for crossing the double yellow lines and for driving 39 miles per hour over the posted 45-mph speed limit. \u00a0Phelps then failed field sobriety tests, and had a blood-alcohol level of .14, well over the state&#8217;s legal limit of .08.<\/p>\n<p>Following this news breaking in October, Phelps <a title=\"Michael Phelps Tweets Statement; Checks Himself Into Rehab\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-tweets-statement-checks-himself-into-rehab\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced that he would enter rehab<\/a>, while <a title=\"Michael Phelps Withdraws From World Team; USA Swimming Enforces Six-Month Ban\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-withdraws-from-world-team-usa-swimming-enforces-six-month-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\">USA Swimming elected to suspend him for six months<\/a>. \u00a0Additionally, USA Swimming and Phelps mutually agreed that <a title=\"Michael Phelps Withdraws From World Team; USA Swimming Enforces Six-Month Ban\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-withdraws-from-world-team-usa-swimming-enforces-six-month-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phelps should withdraw from the 2015 World Championship team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time Phelps has had trouble with substance abuse. \u00a0In 2004, <a title=\"Michael Phelps' First DUI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/phelps-faces-the-judge-today-for-his-dui\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phelps was arrested for DUI as a 19-year-old<\/a>.
