MIAMI – Johanna Gustafsdottir won two individual events to lead the Florida International swimming and diving team to a 64-38 victory over North Florida on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The FIU swimming and diving team improved to a perfect 5-0 in dual meets this season with a 64-38 victory over the North Florida Osprey on Wednesday afternoon at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. The Panthers won eight total events on the day, highlighted by two individual wins by Johanna Gustafsdottir.<\/p>\n
“Today’s meet was all about getting back to competing after two weeks of exams,” said Head Coach Randy Horner. “We moved everyone around a bit and gave the girls some fresh events to swim. We had a good day as a team and will build off of this day to move into holiday training camp mode.”<\/p>\n
Gustafsdottir’s first individual victory came in the 100 butterfly, where she earned a time of 58.72 seconds. The Iceland native followed that up with a time of 1:07.12 in the 100 breaststroke, as she earned her second victory of the day to lead FIU.<\/p>\n
Senior Klara Andersson was FIU’s first event winner of the day, as she earned the title in the 200 IM. FIU earned all thee point positions in that race, as freshman Ally Mayhew and sophomore Jennifer Alfani earned second and third place finishes respectively. Senior Courtney VanderSchaaf picked up a win in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 58.72 seconds. Freshman Skye Carey wrapped up the 100 freestyle with the win as she touched the wall in 53.48 seconds. Another FIU newcomer, junior Valerie Inghels, earned a victory in 500 freestyle, as she earned a mark of 5:21.97. Mayhew wrapped up the FIU winners as she earned the 100 backstroke title.<\/p>\n
In the relay events, Andersson, Alfani, Mayhew and freshman Julianna Pettinger took home the 200 medley relay title.<\/p>\n
The Panthers are back in action on Jan. 3 as they host the FIU Spring Invite.<\/p>\n
The North Florida women’s swim team wrapped up its two-meet tour of South Florida this afternoon with a 64-38 loss to Florida International University. The Ospreys suffer their second setback in as many days while the 36th ranked Panthers remain unblemished at 5-0 in dual meet action this season.<\/p>\n
“We put together some good swims today and I’m happy about that,” said Head Coach Ian Coffey. “It was a good way to wrap up our trip down here and we have something to build on for the rest of the dual meet season.”<\/p>\n
Junior Amy Taylor got the meet started right for the Ospreys with a victory in the 1000 freestyle. She came in with a time of 10:32.56, nearly four seconds faster than her second-place, FIU counterpart. North Florida picked up another point in the event thanks to the third place finish of Kara Plocharsky.<\/p>\n
In the third event of the day, senior Maria Bernard touched first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.52. It was her second fastest time this season in the 200 free. Sophomore Hannah Schrenker turned in her best swim of 2014 in the same event with a time of 2:08.06.<\/p>\n
First-year sprinter Taylor Schmidinger was also impressive, turning in a pair of second place finishes. She was the second to touch the wall in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.60. Rebeca Bernard held the Ospreys secure a fourth point in the event with a third place finish, posting a time of 25.65. Competing in the 500 free for the first time this season, Schmidinger was credited with a second place with a time of 5:28.72.<\/p>\n
Coffey got a season-best time out of sophomore Cara Maxwell in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 1:03.95 bested her swim in this season’s All-Florida Invite in mid-November.<\/p>\n
The Ospreys will get back to CCSA action with a tri-meet with North Carolina A&T and UNC Asheville on Jan. 10 in Greensboro, N.C.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
