IRVINE, California, August 5. THE second-place finisher in the 100 breaststroke, along with Jessica Hardy, Tara Kirk earned a solo triumph in the 200 breast on Saturday night at the United States National Championships. Kirk, whose better event is the shorter distance, turned in a time of 2:28.46 and held off Megan Jendrick at the wall.<\/p>\n
Kirk\u2019s time was not exactly stellar, as it was more than six seconds off the American record of Amanda Beard, who went 2:22.44 at the 2004 Olympic Trials. Jendrick, the winner of the 100 breast at this meet, made a move during the last 50 meters and registered a swim of 2:28.72. Kristen Caverly, a 2004 Olympian, held the lead at the midway point and ended in third place in 2:29.39. Keri Hehn was fourth in 2:29.44.<\/p>\n
"Trials are two years away," Kirk said. "I have the advantage right now, but I'm not going to rest on that."<\/p>\n
