KIM Vandenberg of UCLA and coached by Cyndi Gallagher, outdueled Athens Bulldog Mary Descenza, coached by Jack Bauerle, in an incredible battle for the 200-meter butterfly title.  Vandenberg held onto the triumph in 2:08.51, while Descenza took silver in 2:08.73.<\/p>\n<p>At the 50-meter mark, Descenza took an early lead with a 29.01.  Descenza remained in the lead at the halfway mark with a 1:01.65, while Vandenberg came closer with a 1:01.73.  Vandenberg took the lead at the 150-meter mark with a 1:34.93, while Descenza touched in 1:34.97.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The last year, I was about to leave for the World University Games so I wasn&#39;t tapered fully,&quot; Vandenberg said. &quot;I trained really hard this year.  I owe this all to my friends and family.  I am just so happy.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Vandenberg knocked Olympic gold medalist Summer Sanders off the top-25 performers chart.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Swim Atlanta&#39;s Kathleen Hersey, coached by Mark Minier, picked up bronze in 2:10.53.<\/p>\n<p>In the small final, Longhorn\u2019s Katherine Robinson, coached by Randy Reese, turned in the fastest front half with a 1:03.66 at the 100-meter mark.  Robinson, however, faded to fourth in 2:14.09.  Meanwhile, Auburn University\u2019s Kristen Hastrup, coached by David Marsh, won the race in 2:11.80.  Club Wolverine\u2019s Kathleen Carroll, coached by Bob Bowman, placed second in 2:12.29, while Santa Rosa Neptune Amanda Sims, coached by Dan Greaves, took third in 2:13.50.<\/p>\n<p>In the C final, 14-year-old Natalie Adams of Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club and coached by Clayton Cagle, touched first with a 2:14.37 after taking a lead at the 100-meter mark with a 1:04.46 split.  Meanwhile, Club Wolverine\u2019s Melissa Jaeger, coached by Bowman, finished second in 2:15.20.
