IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 3 N.C. State's Cullen Jones blazed to victory with a conquest of the 50-meter freestyle at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. Overall, he posted a blistering 21.94 time to become the second African-American male sprinter to win a national title behind Olympic gold medalist Anthony Ervin.<\/p>\n
"I was ready to do it tonight," Jones said. "I tried to stay off the feet. I completely surprised myself tonight, but I knew I could do it."<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Stanford Swimming's Ben Wildman-Tobriner, coached by Skip Kenney, raced into silver with a 22.16, while local swimmer of Irvine Novaquatics Jason Lezak, coached by Dave Salo, picked up bronze in 22.22.<\/p>\n
Notably, American-record holder Gary Hall Jr., finished in a tie for fourth with a 22.49 as he and Longhorn Aquatics' Neil Walker touched at the same time.<\/p>\n
Sun Devil Aquatics' Nick Brunelli, coached by Mike Chasson, recorded the fastest reaction time with a .67 off the blocks. Brunelli, however, closed the race in sixth with a 22.53.<\/p>\n
A rare tie occurred in the small final as Bakersfield Aquatics\u2019 Gabe Woodward, coached by Keith Moore, and Stingray Bryan Lundquist, coached by Ian Goss, touched in 22.88. Arizona Swimming Gaucho Scott Goodrich, coached by Charlie Cunningham, placed just behind in third with a 23.12.<\/p>\n
In the C final, California Aquatics\u2019 William Copeland, coached by Mike Bottom, rolled to victory in 23.17, while Stanford Swimming\u2019s Matthew Crowe, coached by Kenney, took second in 23.24. UIC Aquatics\u2019 Blake Booher, coached by Ina Harizanova, closed out the top three in 23.37.<\/p>\n
