IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 3 SWIMMING superstar Michael Phelps captured another title with a meet-record time of 51.51 in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif. Phelps' effort cleared his own standard of 51.88 set in 2002 and also gave him his fourth title of the meet.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Longhorn Aquatics' Ian Crocker took silver in 51.73, while Daytona Beach's Ryan Lochte surged in the final 25 meters to grab bronze in 53.26.<\/p>\n
"It's another chapter in our rivalry," Phelps said of his rivalry with Crocker. "We have had many races like that in the past. We will have more in the future. We really bring out the best in each other."<\/p>\n
Phelps actually stood in third at the 50-meter mark with a 24.65 as Crocker touched first in 24.23 and Doyle split second in 24.49. Phelps, however, put on the jets in the back half with a 26.86 split. <\/p>\n
"I noticed in the first 50 that Ian wasn't out to his normal body length lead," Phelps said. "I could tell it was close, but I wasn't sure if he was slower or I was faster. I was just able to hang on."<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Lochte and Coast Guard Blue Dolphin Peter Verhoef earned the fastest reaction times with matching .67 seconds.<\/p>\n
In a competitive consolation heat, California Aquatics\u2019 Patrick O\u2019Neil, coached by Teri McKeever, held off a bunched field to win in 54.27. Additionally, Santa Barbara Swim Club\u2019s Pat Cary, coached by John Dussliere, touched second in 54.38, while Indiana University\u2019s Nick Walkotten, coached by Ray Looze, snared third in 54.45.<\/p>\n
In the C final, Longhorn Aquatics\u2019 Tommy Sacco, coached by Randy Reese, captured a win with a 55.05, while Trojan Swim Club\u2019s Erik Tolmachoff took second in 55.09. Meanwhile, Longhorn Aquatics\u2019 Dave Donaldson, also coached by Reese, took third in 55.35.<\/p>\n
