FEDERAL WAY – In a second-place effort, Aquazot’s Eva Merrell took down the 13-14 U.S. National Age Group record in the 100-yard fly at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals.<\/p>\n

In one of the more heart-breaking DQs in recent memory at Juniors, Quest\u2019s Maddie Banic won the A final with a 52.65 before drawing a disqualification.<\/p>\n

That moved Mid-Valley\u2019s Mackenzie Rumrill to first with a time of 52.77, while Aquazot 14-year-old Eva Merrell set the 13-14 U.S. National Age Group record with a second-place time of 53.19.<\/p>\n

That swim eclipsed the 53.30 set by Cassidy Bayer earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Longhorn\u2019s Victoria Edwards took third overall in 53.43 with PASA\u2019s Heidi Katter taking fourth in 53.60.<\/p>\n

Y-Sparta\u2019s Katrina Konopka (53.72), Walnut Creek\u2019s Brittany Usinger (53.94) and Lake Country\u2019s Megan Doty (54.49) placed fifth through seventh.<\/p>\n

Taylor Garcia of Byron Center cleared her lifetime best with a winning time of 53.44 in the B final.<\/p>\n

That swim undercut her 53.69 from last winters junior nationals.<\/p>\n

Maddie Murphy gave Garcia a chase, but wound up second in 53.77. \u00a0Tamara Santoyo took third in 53.89.<\/p>\n

Alexis Margett (53.92), Sonia Wang (54.27), Chloe Isleta (54.33), Tevyn Waddell (54.67) and Paige Maynard (54.89) turned in the rest of the B final swims.<\/p>\n

Denver\u2019s Annie Ochitwa cruised to victory in the C final of the event with a 53.82. Her best time entering today had been a 54.10 from the Minneapolis Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

Amy Okada took second in 53.98 with Taylor Pike earning third in 54.47.<\/p>\n

Gabby Vieira (54.53), Jessi Snover (54.60), Mei Lynn Colby (54.81) and Dakota Luther (54.88) also completed legal swims in the bonus heat. \u00a0Shelby Koontz drew a disqualification.<\/p>\n
