IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 1 MICHAEL Phelps claimed his first gold medal of the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Nationals Championships in Irvine, Calif., with a meet-record time of 4:10.16. That effort eclipsed his former standard of 4:11.09 set in 2002.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Daytona Beach's Ryan Lochte made a serious run at Phelps before picking up silver in 4:11.53. Additionally, Phelps' Club Wolverine teammate Erik Vendt continued his remarkable comeback with a bronze-winning 4:12.69.<\/p>\n

"In all, I was pretty disappointed," Phelps said. "I am not happy at all with how the meet has started, but that is the way it goes. Ryan had a great swim and so did Erik. I was going to make it hurt and make sure I got my hand on the wall first, but the last 200 meters were just really bad. It is better than last year, but not where we want to be."<\/p>\n

Phelps went out in the first 50 meters under world-record pace with a 25.89. He built his pace to a 55.10, .40 seconds under world-record pace. He remained on pace at the 150-meter mark with a 1:26.51. Phelps continued on world-record pace with a 1:57.02 at the halfway point.<\/p>\n

Phelps fell out of world-record pace with a 2:33.86, while Lochte closed the gap. Phelps slid further behind world-record pace with a 3:11.44, while Lochte pulled even closer.<\/p>\n

Phelps held a half-second lead of Lochte, as the Florida Gator made a run, but Phelps dropped the hammer in the final 50 meters to pocket gold.<\/p>\n

In the consolation heat, FAST\u2019s Scott Clary jumped out to an early lead at the 200-meter mark with a 2:04.24. Wisconsin\u2019s Timothy Liebhold, however, ripped past to win the event in 4:23.77. Meanwhile, Daytona Beach\u2019s Dustin McLarty snared a second-plac 4:23.63, while Pine Crest\u2019s Christopher Nuess earned third in 4:24.67.<\/p>\n

In the bonus consolation heat, Northern Kentucky Clipper Cory Chitwood recorded the quickest 200-meter split with a 2:06.11. Big Cat Aquatics\u2019 Brennan Morris, however, cruised past Chitwood with a first-place 4:26.08. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley Aquatics\u2019 Scott Weltz placed second in 4:27.30, while Orinda Aquatics\u2019 Scott Lathrope garnered third in 4:27.42.<\/p>\n
