IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 1 KLETE Keller narrowly missed downing his own America record in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif. He wound up finishing just .16 seconds off the standard with a gold-winning time of 3:44.27.<\/p>\n

"I was hoping for a little faster time," Keller said. "I wanted to do a best time. That was my goal, and I felt good going in. I didn't expect to be that far ahead in the 200 so quickly. So, I really didn't know what was going on, like where I would end up. It was a good enough time. It got the job done."<\/p>\n

Club Wolverine teammate Peter Vanderkaay touched just behind in second with a 3:46.81, while Trojan Swim Club's Larsen Jensen pocketed bronze in 3:48.01.<\/p>\n

Keller went out in 1.76 seconds under American record pace at the 200-meter mark as he clocked a 1:49.61. He remained under his record pace at 1.64 seconds at the 350-meter point.<\/p>\n

In the consolation heat, YMCA of the Triangle\u2019s Charlie Houchin closed out the first 200 meters in the quickest time with a 1:55.01. That fast jump helped Houchin to victory in 3:52.89. Nova of Virginia Aquatics\u2019 John Millen snared second in 3;53.65, while Mission Viejo\u2019s Justin Mortimer picked up third in 3:54.77.<\/p>\n

In the bonus consolation heat, Sea Devil Swimming\u2019s Thomas Koucheravy snared the fastest 200-meter split with a 1:55.10 en route to winning the heat in 3:54.81. Meanwhile, Area Tallahassee\u2019s Joseph Ziegler picked up second in 3:54.85, while Georgia\u2019s Matthew Owen earned third in 3:54.87.<\/p>\n
