NEW YORK, N.Y., July 29. FORMER British Olympian Margie Pedder placed first in the second-annual New York Water Taxi Around Governors Island Swim finishing the two-mile course in 37:45. In her first Manhattan Island Foundation event, she bested an international field in taking the title. Pedder, who also competed for the University of Southern California, represented Great Britain at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, swimming the 200 butterfly. <\/p>\n
\u201cI came here to have fun,\u201d Pedder said. \u201cThe water was warmer than I thought it would be, it felt like a swimming pool.\u201d<\/p>\n
Second overall and in the women\u2019s division went to Rondi Davies of Sydney, Australia, in 38.52, while third in the women\u2019s division went to Anna Armentrout of Brooklyn, N.Y., in 43.03. <\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s division, Matt Malina from New York City placed first with a time of 41.07, good for third overall. Second place went to David Barra of High Falls, N.Y., in 42.05, while Gilles Chalandon of New York City placed third in 42.37.<\/p>\n
More than 150 swimmers represented the boroughs of New York City, the states of Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, D.C., as well as Australia, Ireland, Mexico, and United Kingdom. Swimmers ranged in age from 21 \u2013 75. <\/p>\n
Swimmers circumnavigated historic Governors Island in the two-mile course featuring views of lower Manhattan, Jersey City, Staten Island and Brooklyn. Swimmers entered the water from a New York Water Taxi just off Castle Williams, navigated around the southern tip of the island and proceeded north up the Buttermilk Channel, between Governors Island and Brooklyn. After passing the third pier in the Channel, swimmers rounded the northeast side of the Island, passed Dock 102 and headed toward the pontoon boat finish, located just before the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel air vent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
