MONTREAL, Canada, July 28 MIKE Brown of Calgary claimed a victory in Friday\u2019s 100-meter breaststroke at the 2006 Pan Pacific Trials and National Championships swimming competition in Montreal.<\/p>\n
Brown posted the win in 1:01.68. Scott Dickens of Vancouver placed second in 1:02.29 and Mathieu Bois of Montreal third in 1:02.32. The top-two from each event and the best 18 and under swimmer earned berths on Canada\u2019s team for the Pan Pacific Championships August 16-21 in Victoria. <\/p>\n
"I feel like I\u2019m getting back to my old self after tonight\u2019s race," Brown said. "It\u2019s been a tough year for me and I admit I was starting to get a bit worried. I\u2019ve progressed so much over the last four years that it just all hit me this season. But this is the start I wanted to this meet. Now I\u2019m looking for another strong one in the 200 breaststroke and then I can end the season on a high note at the Pan Pacs." <\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s 400 individual medley, Brian Johns of Vancouver took the gold in 4:18.31, just two seconds off his personal best. <\/p>\n
"I came in here with low expectations in this race so this is pretty big for me to post a very respectable time," Johns said. "I hit all the important parts of my race plan and I was most surprised with clocking a personal best split on my breaststroke leg. The shoulder feels good but it\u2019s something that challenges me everyday." <\/p>\n
In the women\u2019s 100 freestyle, Canadian record holder Erica Morningstar of Calgary won in 56.18 with Victoria Poon of Montreal second in 56.32 and Julia Wilkinson of Toronto third in 56.43. <\/p>\n
"I was pleased with the second half of my race," Morningstar said. "My start though could have been faster and that\u2019s something I\u2019ll need to work on for the Pan Pacs." <\/p>\n
Other top-two finishers in men\u2019s competition were Brent Hayden of Vancouver and Rick Say of Victoria in the 100 freestyle and Ryan Cochrane of Victoria and Kier Maitland of Edmonton in the 800 freestyle. <\/p>\n
On the women\u2019s side, Jillian Tyler of Calgary and Lisa Blackburn of Waterloo, Ont., finished one-two in the 100 breaststroke and Kristen Bradley of Newmarket, Ont., and Alexa Komarnycky of Etobicoke placed in the top-two in the 400 IM. <\/p>\n
