Team USA collected an American record during prelims of the FINA World Short Course Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s Evgeny Sedov (20.70), Nikita Konovalov (21.26), Evgeny Korotyshkin (21.65) and Aleksandr Popkov (21.24) hit the top time with a 1:24.85 out of prelims.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, USA&#8217;s Josh Schneider (21.87), Matt Grevers (21.02), Ryan Lochte (20.96) and Darian Townsend (21.70) chased down the American record with a second-seeded time of 1:25.55.<\/p>\n<p>That performance lowered the American record of 1:25.69 set by\u00a0Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Peter Marshall,\u00a0Andrew Schnell and Bobby O\u2019Bryan for Stanford during the 2004 NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s Luca Dotto (21.51), Filippo Magnini (21.44), Marco Orsi (20.78) and Nicolangelo Di Fabio (21.88) placed third in 1:25.61.<\/p>\n<p>Belgium (1:26.91), Japan (1:28.69), China (1:28.81), Paraguay (1:31.25) and Philippines (1:34.33) also advanced to the 50 back prelims. \u00a0That moved her behind only Etiene Medeiros (25.83) in the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s Katinka Hosszu is going for the backstroke sweep after setting world records in both the 100 and 200 back this week. He&#8217;s the second-fastest swimmer in the world this year with a 46.08 from the Jose Finkel Trophy.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s Vlad Morozov has the meet record with a 45.51 as the relay leadoff for the 400 free relay, but won&#8217;t be swimming the event individually.<\/p>\n<p>Ning, meanwhile, scorched his way to a 46.76 for the second seed. \u00a0That swim not long crushed the Chinese record of 47.29 set by Lu Zhiwu at the 2012 World Championships, it also undercut the Asian mark of 46.85 set by Japan&#8217;s Takuro Fujii in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s Joao de Lucca (46.84), Australia&#8217;s Tommaso D&#8217;Orsogna (46.88), Russia&#8217;s Danila Izotov (47.00), Belgium&#8217;s Pieter Timmers (47.05) and France&#8217;s Mehdy Metella (47.26) also made up the top eight.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s Katsumi Nakamura (47.32), France&#8217;s Florent Manaudou (47.38), USA&#8217;s Jimmy Feigen (47.40), Japan&#8217;s Shinri Shioura (47.45), Italy&#8217;s Luca Dotto (47.68), South Africa&#8217;s Leith Shankland (47.72), Cuba&#8217;s Hanser Garcia (47.73) and Cayman Island&#8217;s Brett Fraser (47.81) will also compete in the semifinals.<\/p>\n[table \u201c\u201d 23.81s to lead the way in prelims this morning. \u00a0Kromowidjojo already stands second in the world with a 23.64, while Campbell bettered her fifth-ranked 23.88.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Sjostrom, who owns the top time in the world with a 23.55 from Swedish Championships, elected not to compete individually in this event.<\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s Madison Kennedy touched third overall in 24.07, just a bit off Dara Torres&#8217; American record of 23.82 from 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s Dorothea Brandt (24.08), Bahamas&#8217; Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (24.11), Italy&#8217;s Erika Ferraioli (24.12), The Netherlands&#8217; Inge Dekker (24.24) and USA&#8217;s Abbey Weitzeil (24.27) made up the top half of the semifinal bracket.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s Anna Santamans (24.29), Japan&#8217;s Miki Uchida (24.35), Denmark&#8217;s Pernille Blume (24.40), Russia&#8217;s Rozaliya Nasretdinova (24.52), Brazil&#8217;s Etiene Medeiros (24.56), Finland&#8217;s Hanna-Maria Seppala (24.57), Italy&#8217;s this morning.<\/p>\n<p>The time eclipsed the 51.79 set by George Bovell at the Dubai stop of the FINA World Cup this year. \u00a0<a title=\"George Bovell, Top-Ranked 100 IMer in the World, Pulls Out of World Short Course Championships\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/george-bovell-top-ranked-100-imer-world-pulls-world-short-course-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bovell, however, elected to withdraw from the competition to focus on other goals this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sergei Fesikov checked in with a 52.08 for second out of prelims, while Germany&#8217;s Markus Deibler placed third in 52.16. \u00a0Deibler is the only other 51-second man this year with a 51.81 from the German Championships in Wuppertal.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s Kosuke Hagino (52.62), USA&#8217;s Ryan Lochte (52.66), Poland&#8217;s Marcin Cieslak (52.68), Brazil&#8217;s Henrique Rodrigues (52.73) and Japan&#8217;s Takuro Fujii (52.77) finished fourth through eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s Marco Orsi (53.04), Estonia&#8217;s Martti Aljand (53.17), Hungary&#8217;s David Foldhazi (53.23), Greece&#8217;s Andreas Vazaios (53.35), Israel&#8217;s Yakov Yan Toumarkin (53.36), Czech Republic&#8217;s Jan Sefl (53.52), Brazil&#8217;s Thiago Simon (53.55) and South Africa&#8217;s Sebastien Rousseau (53.55) grabbed the rest of the semifinal transfer 56.03, placed third in prelims as well with a 56.83.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s Ilaria Bianchi and Brazil&#8217;s Daiene Marcal Dias tied for fourth with matching 56.87s, while world-leader Lu Ying cruised into semis with a sixth-place 56.88. \u00a0She has the top swim in the world with a 55.95 from the Beijing stop of the FINA World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s Liliana Szilagyi (56.94) and fifth in the world, while world-record holder Katinka Hosszu cruised into third with a 2:07.04.<\/p>\n<p>Hosszu could be looking for her fourth\u00a0world record of the meet after taking down the 100 back, 200 back and 100 IM marks thus far.<\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s Melanie Margalis (2:07.05), Great Britain&#8217;s Siobhan-Marie O&#8217;Connor (2:07.38), Great Britain&#8217;s Hannah Miley (2:08.22),
