DOHA –\u00a0Mireia Belmonte Garcia cruised her way to a fourth gold medal here at the FINA World Short Course Championships with a meet record in the 400 free. Watch Race Video<\/a><\/p>\n

Belmonte Garcia hit the wall in 3:55.76 to win the middle-distance freestyle event, smashing Katie Hoff\u2019s meet record of 3:57.07 from 2010. \u00a0The time missed Belmonte Garcia\u2019s world record of 3:54.52 set last year in Berlin on the FINA World Cup circuit.<\/p>\n

Belmonte Garcia is just the third European woman to ever win four gold medals at a single World Short Course Championship (200 IM, 400 IM, 400 free, 800 free). \u00a0She joins The Netherlands\u2019 Marleen Veldhuis (2008) and Sweden\u2019s Therese Alshammar (2000, 2002).<\/p>\n

Belmonte Garcia also joins USA\u2019s Janet Evans as just the second swimmer to win both the women\u2019s 400 and 800 freestyle events at the same worlds. \u00a0Evans did it back in 1993.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands\u2019 Sharon van Rouwendaal,\u00a0Swimming World\u2019s Open Water Swimmer of the Year<\/a>, placed second in 3:57.76, while China\u2019s Zhang Yufei finished third in 3:59.51. \u00a0Zhang, just 16, set the Asian record in the event by breaking the 4:00.55 set by Liu Jing back in 2010.<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s Chihiro Igarashi (3:59.59) smashed the Japanese record of 4:01.04 set by Sachiko Yamada back in 2007.<\/p>\n

Hungary\u2019s Boglarka Kapas (4:00.27), Great Britain\u2019s Jaz Carlin (4:02.32), USA\u2019s Elizabeth Beisel (4:03.83) and Australia\u2019s Leah Neale (4:06.45) also competed in the scorching-fast finale.<\/p>\n
