PALO ALTO, Calif., July 14. EARLY next month, FINA will hold the 11th edition of the World Masters Championships on the campus of Stanford University. More than 6,000 athletes are expected to compete in the event, which is scheduled to run from August 3-17 at the Avery Aquatic Center. The facility has four pools.<\/p>\n
One of the pools scheduled to be used for the competition has been forced to undergo a facelift in the days leading up to the start of the meet. In preparation for the event, the Local Organizing Committee brought in surveyors who found that the Baker Pool measured exactly 50 meters. Consequently, it was learned that the pool would not meet proper specifications once the timing pads were put in place.<\/p>\n
In a move that illustrated good will by the LOC and reflected its intentions to bring a top-flight competition to Northern California, the Local Organizing Committee has funded repairs to the Baker Pool that will allow it to meet international specifications. According to Rob Copeland, the president of United States Masters Swimming, and Michael Moore, the chairman of the LOC, the pool will be partially drained and plaster on the wall will be ground down before being refinished. The project is expected to be completed within the next two weeks, in plenty of time for the start of the Masters World Champs.<\/p>\n
