LONDON, July 9. BRITAIN will send one of its biggest aquatic squads to contest a major meet when 64 athletes from swimming, diving, open water swimming and synchronised swimming converge on Budapest for the European Championships. The Hungarian capital will host the best athletes on the continent later this month when events get underway on July 26.<\/p>\n
It's the first time Britain has sent a full team for many years, as the event has coincided with other international commitments over recent times, but they will be looking to impress on their European rivals. Britain's ability to send a large squad against the rest of the continent is due, in no small part, to increased funding released due to the London 2012 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
"The last time Great Britain was represented in all disciplines at a European Championships was in Istanbul in 1999," said British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes. "The additional funding we've received since the announcement of the London Games has now afforded us the opportunity to begin to build a strong team to take on the challenge of the Olympics in just six years time. It will enable our athletes to experience the best international competitions over the next few years, giving them opportunities to learn and develop into Olympic contenders."<\/p>\n
Swimming will take place at the Alfred Hajos Swimming Complex between July 31-Aug. 6. The swimming squad for Britain consists of:<\/p>\n
