Auburn, AL – Auburn swimmer Matt Busbee was named among the ten finalists for the Amateur Athletic Union’s (AAU) 70th Annual James E. Sullivan Memorial Award. The award, sponsored by LamisilAT, recognizes the top amateur athlete in the nation based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the ideals of amateurism. <\/p>\n
The ten finalists announced in Orlando, Fla. by the AAU include, Mateen Cleaves of Michigan State, Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne of Wisconsin, Georgia’s Kelly and Coco Miller, golfer Luke Donald, Jason Jennings of Baylor, wrestler Stephen Neal, diver Mark Ruiz, rower Christian Ahrens and UCLA softball player Stacey Nuveman. <\/p>\n
Busbee, a Mobile native, is a member of the 1999 NCAA Champion, U.S. Open and NCAA record holding 200 free relay team (1:16.50) as well as a 10-time All-American and a four-time SEC Champion. He has been a factor on both of Auburn’s national title swim teams and was the 1999 Auburn male representative for the SEC’s H. Boyd McWhorter scholar-athlete award. <\/p>\n
Academically, he was named to the 1999 GTE Academic All-America Fall\/Winter At-Large second team, in addition to graduating last spring, summa cum laude in Biomedical Sciences. While he is competing his final year of eligibility, he is working on an MBA. <\/p>\n
