BERLIN, Germany, June 25. HE could have completed his meet on Saturday and exited the German Championships as its most decorated athlete. But, Helge Meeuw had one more phenomenal swim in his arsenal for Sunday's slate. Handling the backstroke leg for his club's 400 medley relay, Meeuw clocked a European record of 53.46 for the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n
With titles in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke events and 100 and 200 butterfly races stashed away, Meeuw took down the European standard of Arkady Vyatchanin, who clocked 53.92 in 2003. The mark is the third-fastest performance in history, behind Aaron Peirsol's swims of 53.17 and 53.45. Earlier in the meet, Meeuw set a European record in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n
Britt Steffen, who set a German record in the 100 freestyle earlier in the competition, was the winner of the 50 free with a clocking of 24.94. She was followed by Daniella Gotz in 25.67. Meanwhile, Nicole Hetzer bested the field in the 200 backstroke with a swim of 2:13.34. Second place went to Annika Liebs of 2:13.84. Hetzer also took top honors in the 800 free with a performance of 8:42.76.<\/p>\n
