BUDAPEST – Katinka Hosszu and Daniel Gyurta will look to lower their new short course world records next month at the FINA world championships, but they will not be joined by another of their country’s swimming legends, as Laszlo Cseh will be skipping the meet.<\/p>\n
Cseh was not among the 21 names released by Hungarian Swimming recently, with the federation saying the five-time Olympic medalist did not have enough preparation for the meet after last summer’s European championships. Cseh won three medals at the last short course world championships but will now focus on next year’s long course worlds.<\/p>\n
Hosszu is scheduled to swim a staggering 10 individual events in Doha in December. Among them are the 200 fly and 100 IM, the two events she won at the 2012 short course worlds. She picked up three additional medals at that meet: silver in 200 free and 200 IM and bronze in the 400 IM. Since then, Hosszu has racked up money, medals and world records in the FINA World Cup and will try to lower the world marks she set this fall in all three IM races.<\/p>\n
In addition to the three IMs and defending her 200 fly crown, Hosszu will race the following events: 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 50 back, 100 back and 200 back. She nearly broke the 100 backstroke world record this fall, and will have that in her sights next month.<\/p>\n
Gyurta broke his world record in the 200 breast at the Dubai World Cup meet, and will match up with the likes of Marco Koch in Qatar next month.<\/p>\n
Hungarian national coach Laszlo Kiss said the worlds team is made of mostly first-timers to the international scene, in an effort to get them ready to represent Hungary once veterans such as Hosszu, Gyurta and Cseh have retired. This year’s team will still have its strong medal hopefuls, including Olympic finalist Bence Biczo and world championship finalists Gergely Gyurta, Zsuzsanna Jakabos and Evelyn Verraszto.<\/p>\n
