TEMPE, Ariz. June 13. TWO players on the Arizona State University water polo team have been selected to compete for their respective junior national teams this summer following successful campaigns with the Sun Devil squad in 2006. Rowie Webster, the team\u2019s leading scorer, was selected to the Australian Junior National Team while Addison Doud was named to the U.S. Women\u2019s Junior National Team. Both also will participate in training sessions with their country\u2019s full national teams this summer as well.<\/p>\n
ASU Head Coach Todd Clapper, following his first season at the helm of the Sun Devil program, also was selected to a national team position as he was named the head coach of the U.S. Girl\u2019s Youth National Team. Clapper\u2019s squad will hold a training camp in Los Alamitos, Calif., from July 6-10 before competing in the Pan-American Games August 3-14 in Montreal, Canada.<\/p>\n
Webster shined for the Sun Devils in her rookie campaign as the Melbourne, Australia, native was selected to the AWPCA Third Team All-American while also earning a trio of honors from the MPSF including second team all-league, all-freshman and all-tournament. Webster scored a single-season record 63 goals to pace the ASU offense before becoming just the second Sun Devil to earn All-America honors in the history of the program. Webster is currently training with the full national team in preparation for the FINA World League event.<\/p>\n
Doud, a first-year player from Laguna Beach, Calif., was selected to the junior team as well as the U.S. Women\u2019s Senior National \u2018B\u2019 Team. As a member of the \u2018B\u2019 squad, she will train with the \u2018A\u2019 team from June 23-26 before heading to Quebec City, Canada, for the preliminary rounds of the FINA World League (July 7-9). After that, Doud will return to Los Alamitos, Calif., for more training before heading to Greece for the 2006 Pythia Cup (July 18-24) with the junior team.<\/p>\n
The rookie duo were instrumental in the success of the Sun Devils in 2006 as the team placed sixth in the MPSF Championships before ending their campaign as the No. 6 team in the final national rankings. ASU went 15-13 overall in 2006 and was 5-7 in league play, finishing seventh in the MPSF regular season standings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
