SAN LUIS OBISPO – Wyoming swimming put together a dominant effort against Cal Poly on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams dominated Cal Poly in dual competition on Saturday afternoon in San Luis Obispo, Calif. UW wrapped up their weekend in the Golden State with the Cowboys defeating the Mustangs 180-109 and the Cowgirls picking up a 176-118 victory.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought we did a great job of preparing and executing and it helped us have some really good swims,\u201d associate head coach Matt Leach said. \u201cWe had some people swimming in different events that allowed us to pick up some more confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Cowboys won 15 of the 16 events against Cal Poly. Senior Adam Kalms won three events to lead UW. He won the 200 freestyle at 1:39.10. He followed that up with a win in the 100 freestyle at 45.73 and 200 individual medley at 1:51.65. Junior Ryan Nelson, a native of California won the 500 freestyle with a time of 9:25.84. He also took home the 500 freestyle at 4:45.64. Junior George Eglesfield won both the 100 butterfly at 49.94 and 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:50.90.<\/p>\n
Other Cowboys who added wins were junior Austin Layman in the 100 backstroke at 52.23. Junior Kyle Scalise won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.05. Freshman Kyle White impressed in the 50 freestyle taking the crown at 21.23.Junior Brendan Costello won the 200 backstroke at 1:49.91.<\/p>\n
Wyoming took both relays on the men side. The 400 medley relay team of Layman, Scalise, Eglesfield and junior Bryce Carter won the event with a time of 3.26.26. The 200 freestyle relay team of Carter, senior Ryan O\u2019Leary, White and Scalise took the event with a time of 1:23.70.<\/p>\n
The Cowgirls won 13 of the 16 events on Saturday. Junior Emily Ridout won two events on the day to lead UW winning the 100 freestyle at 52.40 and the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.41. She took a breaststroke event from undefeated freshman Maria Harutjunjan, who recovered with a victory in the 200 breaststroke at 2:19.76.<\/p>\n
Junior Nicole Hlavacek won the 1,000 freestyle taking the title with a time of 10:25.09. In the 500 free junior Keara Chang made it a special homecoming winning the event for the second straight day with a time of 5:02.86. Sophomore Danielle Badger won the 50 freestyle at 24.40. Fellow sophomore Abby Sullivan won the 100 back at 58.39. She added a win in the 200 backstroke at 2:06.45. Junior Molly Coonce won the 100 butterfly with a mark of 56.72. Senior Claudia Carlson took home the final individual event the 200 individual medley at 2:08.28.<\/p>\n
Wyoming took both relays with the team of Sullivan, Harutjunjan, Coonce and Badger winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:51.30. The quartet of redshirt junior Emily Stucky, Badger, freshman Rachel McKivigan and Ridout won the 200 freestyle relay with an impressive mark of 1:36.78.<\/p>\n
In the diving events sophomore Jacob Rehmeier won both boards on the men\u2019s side. In the 1-meter springboard he recorded a 231.60. In the 3-meter event he tallied a 270.75. The Cowgirls took one board with sophomore Keely Bishop winning the 1-meter springboard at 244.05.<\/p>\n
The Cal Poly swimming and diving program won five individual events against Wyoming on Saturday afternoon to highlight an early-season dual meet at Anderson Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
Mustang freshman Bonnie Diamond won the women’s 200-yard freestyle at 1:53.54, before also finishing as the runner-up in the 100 free at 53.13 seconds.<\/p>\n
In the 200 fly, junior Belen Enguidanos touched the wall ahead of anyone else, at 2:05.46.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile on the 3-meter board, freshman Lauren Pierce dove to a win for the Mustangs by totaling a score of 261.67.<\/p>\n
Cal Poly also picked up a victory on the men’s side from senior Paolo Stanchi (shown at right) in the 200 back, at 1:52.23.<\/p>\n
Just two events later, junior Mickey Mackle was first in the 200 breaststroke at 2:06.19. He also added a second-place swim soon afterward, at 1:53.49 in the 200 individual medley.<\/p>\n
