POUGHKEEPSIE – Rider swimming split with Marist swimming during a battle in Poughkeepsie on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
The Rider men won and the Rider women lost at Marist Saturday night.<\/p>\n
\u201cGoing in we knew we were a bit out-matched on the women\u2019s side due to injuries but I think at the end of the season when it counts, at the MAAC Championships, we\u2019ll be ready,\u201d said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher. \u201cAs far as the men\u2019s side, we were a bit complacent the last few meets but tonight they swam very well.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the Rider men freshman Zack Molloy (Toms River\/Toms River HS North) won the 200 freestyle (1:43.57), the 500 free (4:30.98) and the 200 IM (1:55.12) and sophomore Matthan-Matthew Martir (Severn, Md.\/Old Mill) won the 50 free (21.22), the 100 free (47.17) and the 100 butterfly (51.57).<\/p>\n
\u201cMatthan is an outstanding sprinter,\u201d Fletcher said. \u201cHe is racing very well. Zack also had an outstanding meet. His time in the 500 was fantastic.\u201d The Rider record is 4:28, just two second faster.<\/p>\n
Junior Adam Phillips (Springville, Pa.\/Elk Lake) won the 100 breaststroke (59.25) and the 200 breaststroke (2:11.33) and junior Jeff Prichard won the 200 backstroke (1:53.71)<\/p>\n
The 200 medley relay team of Matt Martir, Adam Phillips, Shane Tubb and Zack Molloy won in 1:34.77.<\/p>\n
The 400 free relay of Prichard, sophomore William Molloy (Toms River\/Toms River HS North), freshman Maciej Paz and sophomore Ian Flynn (Dresher, PA\/Upper Dublin) won in 3:10.83.<\/p>\n
For the Rider women sophomore Heather Lonkert (Moon Township, Pa.\/Moon Area) won the 3-meter dive (269.55), freshman Julianna Runk (Baltimore, Md.\/Perry Hall) won the 200 IM (2:14.68) and junior Erin Westcott won the 100 butterfly (1:02.26).<\/p>\n
\u201cThose were very good performances on the women\u2019s side toward the end of the meet,\u201d Fletcher said.\u201dI was pleased with the way we finished up..\u201d<\/p>\n
The 400 free relay of senior Gessica Charniga, freshman Tara Maniace (Neptune, N.J.\/Neptune) sophomore Courtney Reed and sophomore Ariana Palmer won in 3:49.10.<\/p>\n
Last year the Rider men defeated Marist and the Broncs went on to win the MAAC Championship. The Rider women lost to Marist last year and finished second to Marist in the MAAC Championships.<\/p>\n
The Broncs take to the pool again December 5 at the Brown Invitational. \u201cThis is a championship format, like the MAACs, so it is a good rehearsal for the conference meet,\u201d Fletcher said.<\/p>\n
The Marist women\u2019s swimming and diving team took down Rider 184-106 in its final home Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dual meet of the season Nov. 15. The Red Foxes remained unbeaten in MAAC competition, moving to 3-0 and 3-1 overall.<\/p>\n
Freshman Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) won three individual events, leading Marist to 27 points. She began the meet by taking first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:42.93. She placed in the top spot at long and short distances, winning the 200-yard event in 1:57.00 and the 500-yard event in 5:08.61.<\/p>\n
Three more Red Foxes won at least two events, with junior captain Bethany Powhida (Delmar, N.Y.) taking the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes in times of 58.67 seconds and 2:06.93 respectively. In the consecutive freestyle events, sophomore Meredith Wurtz (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) raced to first place finishes of 24.25 seconds at 50 yards and 53.18 seconds at 100 yards. Sophomore Isabella Morreale (Short Hills, N.J.) was dominant in the breaststroke, clocking in at 1:07.85 in the 100-yard event and 2:26.44 at 200 yards.<\/p>\n
Marist\u2019s 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Colleen Lampe (East Setauket, N.Y.), Morreale, freshman Deirdre Connor (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Wurtz kicked off the meet with a first place finish of 1:49.36.<\/p>\n
Senior Kimberly Tobias (San Jose, Calif.) won the 1-meter dive by scoring 270.73 points. Freshman Megan Berardelli (Ambler, Pa.), Tobias, and junior Renata Diotalevi (Madison, Conn.) finished second, third, and fourth in the 3-meter event respectively.<\/p>\n
The Red Foxes will compete at the H2ounds Invitational, where they will face off against Loyola as well as MAAC rivals Saint Peter\u2019s and Iona, on Dec. 5-6 in Baltimore, Md.<\/p>\n
The Marist men\u2019s swimming and diving team suffered its first dual meet loss of the season, falling to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Rider, 185-115, on Nov. 15 in McCann Natatorium. The Red Foxes are now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in MAAC meets.
\nSophomore Ryan Murphy (New Fairfield, Conn.) competed in four events, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:37.59. He finished second in the 500-yard event, clocking in at 4:39.28.<\/p>\n
The 200-yard butterfly belonged to senior Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.), as he won the event in 1:57.11. He placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (51.83 seconds) and 200-yard IM (1:56.23) while also being a member of the runner-up 200-yard medley relay team. Senior Dylan Cummings (Midland Park, N.J.) posted a time of 52.89 seconds to earn a victory in the 100-yard backstroke.<\/p>\n
Junior Josh Dodway (Niskayuna, N.Y.) was victorious in both diving events for the Red Foxes. Dodway\u2019s 318.00 points were nearly 30 points ahead of the rest of the field in the 3-meter dive. He edged Rider junior and reigning MAAC Men\u2019s Diver of the Week Wayco Bailey on the 1-meter board, racking up 274.87 points to Bailey\u2019s score of 270.15 points.<\/p>\n
The Red Foxes\u2019 next competition will be the H2ounds Invitational on Dec. 5-6 in Baltimore, Md. Marist will square off against Loyola and a pair of MAAC rivals in Saint Peter\u2019s and Iona.<\/p>\n
