﻿{"id":114532,"date":"2014-11-16T09:48:08","date_gmt":"2014-11-16T16:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=114532"},"modified":"2014-11-16T09:48:08","modified_gmt":"2014-11-16T16:48:08","slug":"gettysburg-swimming-trumps-susquehanna-messiah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gettysburg-swimming-trumps-susquehanna-messiah\/","title":{"rendered":"Gettysburg Swimming Trumps Susquehanna, Messiah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GETTYSBURG &#8211; Gettysburg swimming managed to pick up wins against Susquehanna and Messiah College.<\/p>\n<h2>Gettysburg Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>Senior Jason Potter (New Canaan, Conn.\/New Canaan) contributed to four victories while classmate Mike Harmon had a hand in three first-place finishes, leading the Gettysburg College men&#8217;s swimming team to a sweep of Messiah College and Susquehanna University in a non-conference tri-meet on Saturday at the Gettysburg College Bullets Pool.<\/p>\n<p>Gettysburg improved to 4-0 on the season and has now won its last 16 dual meets, dating back to Feb. 2, 2013. The Bullet defeated Messiah 173-85 and topped Susquehanna 145-114.<\/p>\n<p>Potter won both the 50-freestyle (21.12) and the 100-freestyle (47.56). He also anchored the winning 200-medley relay (1:36.30) that also consisted of Harmon, freshman Tyler Dougherty (West Chester, Pa.\/Salesianum School [Del.]), and junior Tyler Gould (Darien, Conn.\/Darien), and he led off the victorious 200-medley relay (1:26.98) that also included senior Ashton Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa.\/Upper Dublin), junior Zach Moser (Wyomissing, Pa.\/Wyomissing), and Dougherty.<\/p>\n<p>Harmon touched first in the 100-backstroke (54.35) and the 200-IM (2:00.61).<\/p>\n<p>Also picking up an individual an individual victory was freshman Madison Jaulin (Matthews, N.C.\/Charlotte Latin School), who captured the 200-backstroke in 1:59.92.<\/p>\n<p>The Gettysburg College women&#8217;s swimming team pushed its record to 5-0 on the season with a sweep of Messiah College and Susquehanna University in a non-conference dual meet on Saturday at the Gettysburg College Bullets Pool.<\/p>\n<p>The Bullets topped Messiah 142-119 and clipped Susquehanna 147-114.<\/p>\n<p>Gettysburg won five events on the day, including four individual victories. Sophomore Caroline Moyer (Malvern, Pa.\/Great Valley) was the team&#8217;s lone double-winner, capturing both the the 100-breaststroke (1:08.05) and the 200-breaststroke (2:29.47). Senior Haley Weaver (Charlotte, N.C.\/South Mecklenburg) touched first in the 200-freestyle (1:57.24) as did freshman Savannah Llewellyn (Plainfield, N.J.\/Plainfield) in the 100-backstroke (1:01.16) and sophomore Maddie Tulp (Franklin Lakes, N.J.\/Indian Hills) in the 200-backstroke (2:13.90).<\/p>\n<p>The Bullets also came away victorious in the 200-medley relay, as sophomore Sydney Boswell (Linwood, N.J.\/Mainland Regional), Moyer, Llewellyn, and Weaver teamed up for 1:52.15 clocking.<\/p>\n<p>Gettysburg continues its season with a big dual meet next Saturday, when it hosts defending Centennial Conference champion Ursinus College at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<h2>Susquehanna Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>The Susquehanna men\u2019s swimming &amp; diving team placed second at Saturday\u2019s tri-meet hosted at Gettysburg College. The Crusaders finished ahead of Messiah and behind the host Bullets.<\/p>\n<p>SU finished first in six individual events and took second place in the two relay events. Bill Crumrine (Beaver, Pa.\/Beaver Area) and Jourdan Stewart (Danbury, Conn.\/Danbury) won two events apiece with Crumrine winning the 200 free (1:47.88) and the 500 free (5:00.41) and Stewart taking the top spot in the 100 fly (53.82) and the 200 fly (2:02.53).<\/p>\n<p>Stewart and Crumrine also finished fourth and fifth in the 100 free with respective times of 49.16 and 49.77.<\/p>\n<p>Danny Csakai (Bethlehem, Pa.\/Freedom) finished first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.57 while Sam Calhoun (Bloomsburg, Pa.\/Bloomsburg) touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.26, just ahead of Csakai (2:17.89).<\/p>\n<p>Eric Lawrence (Bethlehem, Pa.\/Freedom) added runner-up finishes in the 100 back (55.26), 200 back (2:00.07) and 200 individual medley (2:01.89). Calhoun was just behind Lawrence in the IM with a third-place time of 2:04.74.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Henry Chang (Audobon, Pa.\/Methacton) continued a strong first season by placing fourth in both the 1000 freestyle (10:40.21) and the 200 butterfly (2:04.74). David Miller (Ithaca, N.Y.\/Ithaca) also added a third-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.57.<\/p>\n<p>The Crusaders bookended the tri-meet with runner-up finishes in both relay events as the foursome of Miller, Csakai, Lawrence and Duncan Frazier (Montgomery, Pa.\/Williamsport Area) began the day in the 200 medley relay by posting a 1:39.53 time. The team of Stewart, Csakai, Miller and Frazier later combined to take second in the 200 free relay in 1:29.14.<\/p>\n<p>The Susquehanna women&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving team finished third behind Gettysburg and Messiah at Saturday&#8217;s tri-meet hosted by Gettysburg College.<\/p>\n<p>Kelsey Lessard (Chestertown, Md.\/Queen Anne&#8217;s County) and Lexi Cole (Danville, Pa.\/Danville) claimed individual victories for the Crusaders in the 200 butterfly (2:16.79) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:22), respectively. Lessard&#8217;s mark was less than half a second off her personal best of 2:16.43, the fourth-fastest time in program history.<\/p>\n<p>Lessard also added runner-up finishes in both the 200 breaststroke (2:33.79) and the 200 individual medley (2:15.71). Cole placed third in the 200 free with a time of 2:01.28.<\/p>\n<p>In the first event of the afternoon, the 200 medley relay, the team of Annie Bruxelles (Hockessin, Del.\/Sanford School), Joann Butkus (Barnesville,Pa.\/Tamaqua Area), Ashlee Weingarten (Hackettstown, N.J.\/Hackettstown) and Jessica Jozefiak (Doylestown, Pa.\/Central Bucks East) finished third with a time of 1:53.26, only seven tenths of a second behind second place.<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of Jozefiak, each member of the relay also finished second in an individual event; Butkus finished runner-up in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:10.85) while Weingarten placed second in the 100 fly in 1:00.02, over two seconds ahead of the next finisher. Weingarten also sprinted to a third-place result in the 50 free with a time of 25.81.<\/p>\n<p>Bruxelles touched the wall second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.75) and the 200 backstroke (2:15.80) and was closely followed by Erin McElwee (Phoenixville, Pa.\/Phoenixville Area), who finished fourth in both events with respective times of 1:03.43 and 2:16.63.<\/p>\n<p>The Crusaders took the fourth and fifth spots in the 1000 free as Caroline Henderson (Berkeley Heights, N.J.\/Governor Livingston) and Valerie Stearns (North Wales, Pa.\/North Penn) finished in 11:22.62 and 11:41.40.<\/p>\n<p>SU was also just outside the top three in the 100 free as Cole and Kyle Seaman (Moreland Hills, Ohio\/Orange) finished fourth and fifth in 57.03 and 57.19, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Susquehanna capped the afternoon as runner-up in the 200 free relay behind a strong performance from Butkus, Cole, Seaman and Weingarten in 1:41.73.<\/p>\n<h2>Messiah Press Release<\/h2>\n<p>The Falcons lost both duals against Gettysburg College (173-85) and Susquehanna University (167-92) to fall to 3-4 on the season.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcons only won one of 14 events in today&#8217;s double-dual. The lone winner was Aaron Eckman who won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:25.28. Eckman also swam well in the 500 yard freestyle finishing with a time of 5:02.95<\/p>\n<p>The other second place finisher was Dakota Schmalz who finished with a time of 2:02.94 in the 200 yard butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Finishing third in his respective event was Nate Brown who finished with a time of 0:22.13 in the 50 yard Freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcons will be back in action November 22, when they take on Albright College at Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcons beat Susquehanna University 137-124 and lost to Gettysburg College 142-119 in the double-dual at Gettysburg College. The victory over Susquehanna was their first in program history.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcons won five of 14 events in the double-dual. Leading the Falcons was Tara Freeman who won three events (50, 100 yard freestyle, and 100 yard butterfly). Freeman finished with a time of 0:24.65 in the 50 yard freestyle, 0:53.90 in the 100 yard freestyle, and 0:59.45 in the 100 yard butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Another first place finisher for the Falcons was Lauren Clune who won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:08.40. Clune also finished second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:25.39.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcons had their final first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The team of Lindsey Perez, Mikaela Schell, Katie Wingert, and Tara Freeman finished with a time of 1:40.60 to capture the victory.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable performers for the Falcons were Katie Wingert and Laura Penwell.
