UNIVERSITY PARK – Virginia’s Courtney Bartholomew and Michigan’s Evan White each won two individual events to lead the Cavalier women and Wolverine men to leads after the first day of racing at the two-day Penn State tri-meet.<\/p>\n

The Cavalier women lead Michigan (99-68) and Penn State (94-73), while the Michigan men lead Virginia (118-47) and Penn State (105-62). The Penn State men lead Virginia (99-66) while the Michigan women lead Penn State (93-74).<\/p>\n

Penn State started off the evening with a win in the women’s 200 medley relay, as Kaitlin Saloky, Alyson Ackman, Kaitlin Jones and Carolyn Fittin topped the heat in 1:32.02, a second in front of Virginia (1:33.01). On the men’s side, Michigan’s Paul Powers, Vinny Tafuto, Justin Glanda and Bruno Ortiz got to the wall first in 1:20.18, just edging Penn State’s A relay that touched in 1:20.59.<\/p>\n

The Virginia women took over from there, winning the next four individual events. Courtney Bartholomew picked up the first individual win of the meet, touching in 2:00.72 in the 200 IM to lead a 1-2-3 Cavalier sweep in that event with teammates Ellen Williamson (2:01.10) and Kaitlyn Jones (2:01.51). Leah Smith followed with a commanding win in the 500 free at 4:45.65, the second-best time in the nation this season.<\/p>\n

Laura Simon added a win in the 100 breast (1:02.52) over Michigan’s Emily Kopas (1:02.83) to build a huge lead for the Cavaliers. Bartholomew picked up a second win in the 200 back at 1:54.88, a season best and the fourth-best time in the country this season. Michigan’s Ali DeLoof (100 free, 50.02) and Penn State’s Katie Rowe (200 fly, 2:00.27) also won individual events tonight.<\/p>\n

The Michigan men earned victories in three individual events to build a comfortable cushion in the standings. Evan White cruised to a win in the 200 IM in 1:49.08, about a second in front of teammate Pete Brumm (1:50.21). White would return later in the meet to win the 200 fly in 1:49.19. The Wolverines followed that up with another 1-2 finish in the 500 free, thanks to Dylan Bosch (4:23.90) and Justin Glanda (4:28.90). Bosch’s time ranks fifth nationally this season.<\/p>\n

Yannick Kaeser picked up a win for the Virginia men in the 100 breast, just out-touching Michigan’s Bruno Ortiz, 54.66 to 54.73. Penn State picked up two wins tonight from Nate Savoy (200 back, 1:46.08) and Shane Ryan (100 free, 43.83). Ryan’s time is the fourth-fastest this season and knocked about half a second off his previous top time of 44.32.<\/p>\n

The Michigan women closed out day one with a win in the 400 medley relay behind strong swims from Clara Smiddy, Emily Kopas, Marni Oldershaw and Ali DeLoof (3:41.43). The Michigan men’s relay of Aaron Whitaker, Richard Funk, Dylan Bosch and Bruno Ortiz swam a 3:13.38 to take the men’s relay in the third-fastest time in the NCAA this season.<\/p>\n
