{"id":113696,"date":"2014-11-06T07:55:45","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T14:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=113696"},"modified":"2014-11-06T07:55:45","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T14:55:45","slug":"naoya-tomita-now-denies-stealing-camera-asian-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/naoya-tomita-now-denies-stealing-camera-asian-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Naoya Tomita Now Denies Stealing Camera at Asian Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr<\/p>\n<p>NAGOYA &#8211; A month after <a title=\"Japanese Swimmer Naoya Tomita Suspended 17 Months After Stealing Camera At Asian Games\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/japanese-swimmer-naoya-tomita-suspended-17-months-after-stealing-camera-at-asian-games\/\" target=\"_blank\">being suspended for 17 months by the Japanese Swimming Federation<\/a>, Japanese breaststroker Naoya Tomita now denies\u00a0that he stole a professional photographer&#8217;s camera at the Asian Games.<\/p>\n<p>News broke during the Asian Games that <a title=\"Japanese Swimmer Naoya Tomita Kicked Off Asian Games Team For Stealing Camera\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/japanese-swimmer-naoya-tomita-kicked-off-asian-games-team-for-stealing-camera\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tomita was kicked off the Japanese team<\/a> while in Incheon, South Korea to compete in the Asian Games. \u00a0While in South Korea, Tomita admitted to stealing a camera left poolside by a South Korean photojournalist and that the act was confirmed by video surveillance. \u00a0Tomita was later<a title=\"Naoya Tomita Fined One Million Won For Camera Theft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/naoya-tomita-fined-one-million-won-for-camera-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\"> fined one million won (or about $1,000 U.S.) for the theft<\/a>. \u00a0Japanese Swimming nearly banned Tomita for life, but backed off and only applied a 17-month ban.<\/p>\n<p>Today during a press conference in Japan, however, Tomita has recanted his admission that he stole the camera. He has now claimed that an &#8220;unknown man&#8221; placed the camera in his bag and he didn&#8217;t realize it until he already was back in the athletes&#8217; village.<\/p>\n<p>Tomita then stated that he admitted to stealing the camera in Japan because he was told by South Korean police that &#8220;if I admitted it, the punishment would be light and it wouldn&#8217;t become a serious matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I shouldn&#8217;t have confessed,&#8221; Tomita told local media. &#8220;The police showed me pictures of the security cameras only on a smartphone and the images were very rough and blurred.
