PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, May 21. HEAD Swimming and Diving Coach Chuck Knoles has announced the signing of three Panthers for the men\u2019s swimming team in the Spring 2006 signing period. The newcomers for the 2006-07 season are Geoffrey Morgan, Ren\u00e8 Hijorth and Alex Kubicek.<\/p>\n
Morgan (Mountainville, NY\/Cornwall Central) was the 2005 and 2006 NY high school state champion in the 100 fly and a 2005 U.S. Open qualifier. A very talented athlete with size and strength, he has the potential to be an outstanding collegiate swimmer and could help the Panther squad move forward in the Big East Conference and NCAA as a key figure in the butterfly events. <\/p>\n
\u201cGeoff is a very talented athlete with a tremendous work ethic and is accomplished academically as well,\u201d Knoles said. \u201cHe will help our men\u2019s program gain the strength it needs to take a big step forward in the coming year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hjorth (Copenhagen, Denmark\/Falkonergaardens Gymnasium) joins the Pitt squad with tremendous international experience and ability in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Hjorth brings several key components to the Pitt squad, including impressive size, strength and maturity. He is one of the top sprinters in Denmark and should make an immediate impact both nationally and in the Big East Conference. <\/p>\n
\u201cRen\u00e9 is a strong young man with very impressive size and a passion to get better,\u201d Knoles noted. \u201cHe will likely prove to be one of the key players in the Panthers' rise back to the top of the Big East Conference.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kubicek (Pittsburgh, Pa.\/Gateway) will join the Pitt program after swimming for several years under Team Pittsburgh Aquatics. Kubicek will complete the trifecta of sprinters joining the Panther squad with outstanding ability and success in sprint freestyle. Kubicek won the 50 freestyle at the WPIAL meet at Pitt this year and scored in that event at the PIAA meet held in the spring. He also has great potential in the sprint fly according to Knoles.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlex will bring that Western Pennsylvania \u2018get-it-done, hard-nosed\u2019 work ethic to the team,\u201d Knoles said. \u201cHe\u2019s the type of swimmer every coach hopes for as a potential leader for a program.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kubicek, Hjorth and Morgan will join Adam Plutecki (Zielona Gora, Poland\/) who joined the Panthers back in January. Plutecki is one of the top-ranked European swimmers in the sprint breaststroke, individual medley and in middle distance freestyle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
