DENTON – Sammie Bosma and Sycerika McMahon each won two individual events and the Texas A&M women’s swimming and diving team broke four pool records Friday night to sweep North Texas and Houston and stay undefeated in dual meet competition this season.<\/p>\n
The Texas A&M women’s swimming and diving team remain undefeated after victories over the University of Houston and University of North Texas on Friday.<\/p>\n
The Aggies maintain their perfect 3-0 record for the season after taking down the UH Cougars 140-95 and the UNT Mean Green 140-86. The women took first in 12 of the 13 events.<\/p>\n
“I am very pleased with our girls,” said head coach Steve Bultman. “They went out and raced hard tonight. This was a great way to end a good week of training.”<\/p>\n
Stand out swims came from seniors Sarah Henry and Sammie Bosma as well as sophomore Sycerika McMahon. The senior duo claimed victories in both of their events. Henry had a solid 400 IM going a 4:13.11 and finished the night with a 2:17.07 in the 200 breaststroke. Bosma had a had two great performances going 22.72 in the 50 freestyle and blew away the rest of the competition with a 2:03.17 in the 200 butterfly. McMahon started the meet strong taking first in the 200 freestyle with a 1:49.38. In her 500 freestyle, she wiped out the competition going a 4:51.85, winning by 17.5 seconds.<\/p>\n
On the boards, sophomore Madison Hudkins lead the way for the Aggies. Hudkins took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. On the 1-meter, Hudkins finished with a score of 276.35. She won the 3-meter event by a devastating 67 points scoring a 329.90.<\/p>\n
Next up, the women will take on their long time rivals, the Texas Longhorns. The two will meet up at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin next Friday.<\/p>\n
The North Texas swimming and diving team was split in a Halloween-day double dual at the Pohl Recreation Center, beating Houston but falling to a nationally-ranked Texas A&M squad.<\/p>\n
Senior Mona Groteguth led the way for the Mean Green, claiming the team’s only top finish in the 200 backstroke. North Texas concluded the day with five top-three finishes.<\/p>\n
Head coach Brendon Bray knew what to expect out of a championship-caliber Texas A&M team that begins the season ranked in the nation’s top ten. The real story was in the Mean Green’s win over Houston. North Texas dominated the Cougars, beating them in all but three events on the day. The victory marks just the fourth time that North Texas has beaten the team in 20 all-time meetings. Bray said that previous losses to Houston served as motivation for today.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a 3-16 record against them before this meet and I think we used that as motivation,\u201d Bray said. \u201cYou get better when you beat teams that you haven\u2019t beaten in the past and in that regard we really took a step forward today.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the win, North Texas moves to 2-1 on the season, matching last year\u2019s win total. They now prepare for tomorrow\u2019s matchup with conference foe Rice. Start time from Denton is set for 11 a.m. in the Pohl Recreation Center.<\/p>\n
Quick Hits:<\/strong><\/p>\n Groteguth\u2019s first place time of 2:00.81 in the 200 back is currently the fastest in Conference USA.<\/p>\n With her second place finish in the 400 IM (4:27.36), senior Krista Rossum now owns the top two conference times for that event.<\/p>\n The 400 medley relay team of Mona Groteguth, Krista Rossum, Sydney Buckley and Lauren Tidwell claimed the second-best conference time in that event (3:52.17).<\/p>\n Texas A&M broke four Pohl Recreation Center records on Friday. The Lady Aggies now own eleven Pohl records.<\/p>\n Eleven Cougars scored podium finishes on Friday afternoon as the University of Houston fell to No. 3 Texas A&M, 140\u201396, and North Texas, 144-86, at the Pohl Recreation Center.<\/p>\n \u201cWe came together as the meet went on and swam well with each other,\u201d said head coach Rich Murphy. \u201cMackenzie Alspaugh continues to grow her performances after being the team\u2019s most improved athlete last year, and Ashley Grijalva had two strong swims to lead us today.\u201d<\/p>\n Alspaugh set a season best in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing third in the event with a time of 5:08.73. Grijalva finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.55) followed by Cameron Balkom with a time of 2:27.68.<\/p>\n Several other Cougars made the podium on Friday, including Maya Owens with a strong third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.96). Emma Moore took third in the 100-yard freestyle, and in the 200-yard backstroke Taylor Derevyanik placed third (2:11.55).<\/p>\n UH\u2019s relay squads also swam well on Friday. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Bednjanec, Alspaugh, Hamrick and Moore led the way, finishing second in their event with a time of 1:38.91.<\/p>\n Redshirt freshman Micaela Bouter had two second place finishes in 1-meter dive (261.75) and 3-meter dive (263.25). Junior Danielle Shedd took third in the 1-meter dive (251.00) and sophomore Taylor Olanski grabbed third in the 3-meter dive (257.45).<\/p>\n \u201cThe team energy from today will serve well in tomorrow\u2019s meet,\u201d said Murphy. \u201cI am excited to see us continue to improve and grow as a squad.\u201d<\/p>\n UH falls to 0-4 after Friday\u2019s tri-meet.<\/p>\nHouston Press Release<\/h2>\n
