IOWA CITY, Iowa, May 10. ACCORDING to a story in the Des Moines Register<\/i>, the University of Iowa may be hit with NCAA sanctions due to violations concerning falsified admissions applications. The article, written by Tom Witosky, indicated that Iowa reported the potential violations against itself and that the school is working with the governing body of college sports in reference to penalties.<\/p>\n
According to the article, the investigation started in October 2004 and is connected to former coach John Davey leaving the program just before the season started in late December. Iowa declined to name the swimmers involved in the probe, but the newspaper account indicated that three Polish swimmers, Tomasz Dziedic, Konrad Kasmierczak and Mariusz Muras, are the likely focus. All three swimmers did not compete during the 2004-05 season and are no longer listed as receiving letters for their efforts the previous season.<\/p>\n
"I just got a tip and followed it up," said Fred Mims, Iowa\u2019s associate athletic director of academic services and compliance. "It is getting a little better, but it is very difficult to check some of these (foreign) transcripts. The bottom line is that you have to trust people to tell you the truth and sometimes they don't."<\/p>\n
Iowa could be subject to a reduction in scholarships, a postseason ban and recruiting limitations. More, Iowa has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine. The school will also forfeit points for competitions in which the illegal athletes participated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
